Watch the Streetfighter: Legend of Chun-Li trailer. Yes, after Van Damme’s Streetfighter movie we can be forgiven for having wanted Streetfighter to stay buried, but now that Kristin Kreuk has stepped out of Smallville into the lead role of Chun-Li, perhaps its time to give this version a chance.
Battlestar Galactica returned after a very long wait and in typical form delivered knock-out punch shocks.
!!!Dont’ read this article if you haven’t seen the latest episode because it will spoil it for you senseless. Read on only if you’ve seen it, or if you don’t care if you ruin it for yourself!!!
Sometimes a Great Notion is the 64th Battlestar Galactica episode to air in the new re-imagined series; it is episode 11 of Season 4. At the end of episode 10 (aired way back on 13 June 2008) the fleeing humans finally made it to Earth and despite their hopes for a new home, all they found was a nuclear wasteland. In this episode, the aftermath of their find is portrayed brilliantly as the characters struggle to deal with the ramifications – and the revelations.
After waiting more than six months to see what would happen, Sometimes a Great Notion didn’t entirely disappoint. Admiral William Adama (Edward James Olmos) and President Laura Roslein (Mary McDonnell) wallow in self pity over the internal guilt of leading the human race to its doom. Starbuck (Katee Sackhoff) reels as she discovers her body in the wreckage of her previously destroyed Viper leading her to believe she is a Cylon, whilst four of the remaining five Cylons discover something completely unexpected – that they are actually from Earth and lived on Earth some 2000 years ago! If you’re a Battlestar Galactica fan then you must have heard of Bear McCreary – if not, you’ve probably heard his work without realizing it. He’s the music composer of the absolutely astounding score to the Battlestar Galactica series. He’s also the composer to the brilliant score behind Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles.
Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles the music score was released just under a month ago (December 23, 2008). There’s three songs that ruin the mood of McCreary’s music but apart from that the rest of the soundtrack is superb – typical McCreary top-quality musical craftsmanship. Since it’s release it has received nothing but rave reviews, with all reviewers handing it 5 out of 5 stars. I too give it 5 out of 5 stars and believe this is one for any sci-fi music buffs collection.
If you don’t know much about McCreary then I suggest you go out of your way to find some of his music to listen to because he’s easily the best music composer in Television. You can visit his official website to learn more about him. You can also find all of his released albums in the Sci Fi Scoop Mall.
Battlestar Galactica – Want to buy a full size Colonial Viper? Your chance is now. Between January 16-17 the Auction Network are going mad on auctioning off real Battlestar Galactica props. Not just any old prop either, some very cool and very iconic gear is included in this auction. No need for me to list the items as there are far too many. In fact, if you can name it as a prop from the show it’s probably in the auction. These are the real deal, so if you’ve got some money to burn head on over to The Official Battlestar Galactica Props and Costumes Auction and take a look at what’s up for sale. Oh yes, and don’t forget, the final eleven episodes begin airing today!
Terminator: Salvation – McG has let more info out about Terminator: Salvation – a lot more. Linda Hamilton, who played Sarah Connor in the first two movies, will be back. Not in person, but doing a voice over. Remember Sarah Connor (John Connor’s mother) was making tape recordings for her son in the 1984 Terminator movie? Well these will be the recordings we hear in Salvation (freshly recorded by Linda Hamilton). If that wasn’t cool enough, McG also hints that talks are underway for Arnold Schwarzenegger to become involved – whatever it is it will probably be minor, but it’s looking like he will be involved in some capacity. Rumors have it that there may be Terminator T800’s sporting Schwarzenegger’s face in the movie, perhaps using some form of CGI capacity. Read the rest of this entry »
Star Trek fans are about to get a new Star Trek movie but rather than rejoice you’d think it was the end of the world. Recently J.J. Abrams, the director of Star Trek XI, attended the Television Critics Association and attempted to address some of the questions and issues that have been thrown his way. SCI FI Wire has posted an article about his responses here, and in response the majority of fan rhetorical has been nothing short of whining.
Of course negative expectations towards Star Trek XI shouldn’t come as too much of a surprise considering how poor most of the previous Star Trek movies have been. Apart from Star Trek 2: Wrath of Khan and a few cool Borg scenes in Star Trek: First Contact the Star Trek film franchise has rarely delivered anything worth raving about. Most of the rhetoric seems to ignore this in favor of criticism of Abrams himself, but on that note, Abrams has hardly scratched the surface of bad screen time compared to the astounding record the Star Trek franchise has amassed. I was probably too young to appreciate Star Trek: The Motion Picture, so it was with great apprehension and low expectations that I trundled along to the cinema to view its sequel, Star Trek: The Wrath of Khan. Oh what a surprise. Wrath of Kahn turned out to be one of the best sci-fi movies I’d ever seen, and even to this day remains my top pick for the best Star Trek movie of all time.
What made Wrath of Khan so special? There were many things, but the biggest and most obvious was the character of Khan, the excellent villain played by actor Ricardo Montalban.
Only yesterday I started compiling a list of the top villains in sci-fi, and more than two decades on I selected Montalban’s Khan to feature in the top 10. So less than 24 hours after digging up some info on Montalban and his character, it comes as a bit of a shock to learn he has died.
Ricardo Montalban was a superb actor in so many ways, and despite having appeared in more than 60 movie and television shows that included a 6 year stint on Fantasy Island, I’m quite certain his on screen performance that will be most remembered will be his role as Khan in Star Trek.
New new sci-fi action block-buster Outlander is set for its theatrical debut in the US and Canada next week – and it needs movie-going support.
Outlander is a movie with a very cool premise. It tells the story of an alien man (James Caviezel) from a distant planet who, during the time of the Vikings, crash lands on Earth inadvertently bring with him a vicious and powerful alien predator known as the Moorwen. The Moorwen is a super-powerful animal-like creature that intends to wipe out everything on Earth. Caviezel’s character is determined to save Earth and he must forge an alliance with the Iron Age Viking’s to do so.
Despite having all the traits to make it one of 2009’s best sci-fi action flicks, it has struggled to find a wide theatrical release reportedly due to financial troubles being experienced by The Weinstein Company – the company that owns distribution rights. Read the rest of this entry »
Here’s a summary of some of the more interesting sci-fi news of the day.
Virtuality – If you haven’t heard, Fox aren’t happy with Ronald D. Moore’s new sci-fi series pilot. The story in a nutshell: Virtuality isn’t mainstream enough and Fox want it dumbed down. Well, that’s the way I see it without the sugar coating. Here’s the sugar coated version according to Kevin Reilly, president of entertainment for Fox: “It [Virtuality] could air as is, and there’s a certain segment of the audience that would flip over it, but it is, I think, right now a little bit too dense. They shot a two-hour pilot, and I think the storytelling probably would have been served as a one-hour, so they’re going in, and they’re re-cutting, and we’re going to look at it. It’s pretty cool.” Flip over it? It’s pretty cool? There was some doubt as to whether or not the pilot would even see screen time, but after those comments I’d say the butchering that’s been imposed upon Ron Moore is just a delay and not an ending.
