Bear McCreary during the production of Someone to Watch Over Me
Bear McCreary, the famed music composer behind Battlestar Galactica, calls the latest episode of Battlestar Galactica, ‘Someone to Watch Over Me’, his most musically innovative score yet. Given that his music is always superb and consistently innovative, that’s saying something!
McCreary states he was intimately involved with the production of the episode from the earliest draft of the script right through to the end, and to coincide with this he has written a three part memoir that follows his experience. These are long and highly detailed articles that include lots of on set photo’s and are extremely interesting to say the least. How McCreary finds time to do his job and manage the level of content on his blog is beyond me.

Watch this excellent feature on Zack Snyder’s Tales of the Black Freighter, the animated companion piece to Watchmen.
It includes news clips from the story together with commentary from various members of the cast and crew, including Gerard Butler (voice of the main character, the Mariner), Dave Gibbons (co-creator and writer of the graphic novel), Lloyd Levin (producer), Tyler Bates (music composer) and of course Zack Snyder himself.
Zack Snyder will in time release a director’s cut of Watchmen that will include Tales of the Black Freighter woven into the feature film itself. How he’ll manage this is anybody’s guess, but it sounds cool. You’ll have to wait a while for this to happen though, whereas Tales of the Black Freighter will be released on DVD and Blu-Ray March 24.
Check out this awesome looking high-quality Queen Alien model on its way from Sideshow Collectibles.
These Queen Alien Polystone Diorama’s are individually numbered, hand-finished and hand-painted replica models that stand 16 inches high and weigh an arm-curling weight of more than 4.5kg.
The Alien was first designed by H.R. Giger in 1979 and has since become an iconic sci-fi alien featuring in the Aliens and Aliens vs Predator movie series. The Queen Alien was first seen in James Cameron’s Aliens.
Sideshow Collectibles are only allowing two of these per customer, but at US $399 I’m fairly certain that’s not too much of a problem for die-hard Aliens fans.

Watch this exclusive interview by Sci Fi Wire with Watchmen’s director Zack Snyder, where he explains what it took to adapt such an iconic graphic novel into a movie:
CSI is set to air an episode on April 16 (Season 9, Episode 20) in which a few science fiction related cameo’s will be seen. The episode, titled ‘A Space Oddity’, will document an investigation into a murder at a sci-fi convention.
According to The Watcher, David Weddle and Bradley Thompson, who wrote the most recently aired episode of Battlestar Galactica, have written the episode in which Kate Vernon (Ellen Tigh in Battlestar), Ron Moore (Executive Producer of Battlestar) and Michael Nankin (a director on Battlestar) will all appear.
And apparently there’ll be a few more cameo’s too.
In what is surely destined to be regarded as the most incredible and gut wrenching film rendition of a train crash scene in movie history, check out this advance preview from Nicholas Cage’s new sci-fi film, Knowing.
If you’re a fan of Doctor Who then you’re no doubt interested in the spinoff series based upon his one time robot dog sidekick, K9.
The spinoff series will include 13 half-hour episodes that have been co-produced by the original creator of K9, Bob Baker. It stars Robyn Moore (Undead / The Horsemen) as June Turner, newcomer Daniel Webber as Darius, and Keegan Joyce (who appeared in Superman Returns) as Starkey.
The first two episodes are part 1 and 2 respectively in a story titled ‘Feast of the Merrons’.
K9 will be brought to the screen as both an animatronic prop and in CGI form. K9’s new updated design has yet to be released, but according to the producers he will be sleek and different to anything seen before – but recognisable to new and old fans.
The image above is the first time the logo has been seen. From Gallifrey One:
Paul Tams, the show’s co-creator and co-associate producer, told The Doctor Who News Page: “As eagle-eyed people may spot, I based the new logo on K9’s old-type font of Westminster, with an update. The font is also used on K9’s new body.”
The series is well and truly into its production with principal photography due to complete in May. Although air dates have not been confirmed the first episodes are expected to air on Australia’s Network 10 later this year. Yes, K9 is an Australian production by the Film Finance Corporation.
McG says Terminator's (left) look less like toys than Transformers (right)
It seems despite reports that the rivalry between McG and Michael Bay had been dealt with, it would appear to be fresh once again. In a report on Digital Spy (which I found via Filmonic) McG has voiced his opinion that Terminator Salvation is more realistic than blockbuster rival Transformers.
McG was speaking to Empire when he dismissed Michael Bay’s robot movies, claiming that they rely on “breakdancing”, “backspins” and implausible action scenes.
“I think Transformers is a terrific picture, but that’s a picture whose genesis is in a toy. They’re sort of more colourful and optimistic and the pictures are sort of breakdancing and flips and backspins,” he said.
“But ours is a very different, real world. Ours is a world of, ‘This is where we can be ten years from now’. The whole idea for doing this movie was to honour the first three movies… But begin again!”
Michael Bay started the rivalry earlier this year when he accused McG of copying Transformers ‘giant robots’ as a result of the giant robot that appears in the Terminator Salvation preview. Since then the rivalry has become one of the hottest topics amongst fans, with Transformers and Terminator fanboys going head to head all over the internet. It’s really quite funny.
Terminator Salvation and Transformers: Revenge Of The Fallen will both be released mid year, but Terminator Salvation will get the jump on its toy-based rival. Salvation will be released on 21 May, whilst you’ll have to wait until 24 June to see Revenge of the Fallen.
