Star Trek Cameo’s Do Wonders For Family Guy Ratings

Sunday night’s episode of Family Guy, titled ‘Not All Dogs Go To Heaven’, helped CBS score the number one spot of the night after 8.2 millions viewers tuned in to watch cameos from the entire cast of Star Trek: The Next Generation.

The episode followed Stewie who, after missing out on getting to ask a question at a Star Trek convention, builds a transporter and beams the entire cast to his bedroom so that they can spend a day having fun with him.

Recently news has been floating around that Bryan Fuller is very interested in helming a new Star Trek television series.  It’s fair to assume that the fever pitch over J.J. Abrams’ new movie combined with the ratings results of Family Guy aren’t hurting his chances.

If you missed the episode, a good portion of the cameo scenes are contained in this video:

‘Star Wars: The Clone Wars’ Clip – Obi Wan Vs Grievous

Obi Wan confronts General Grievous in this clip from Star Wars: The Clone Wars.  It’s titled Obi Wan vs Grievous but really it’s more Obi Wan vs Grievous’ robots.  Still, it’s cool.

‘Star Trek’ Sequel Is On The Way

Star Trek XI

J.J. Abrams’ new Star Trek has yet to be released but Paramount Pictures are feeling so confident in its potential success that they’ve already announced plans to move ahead with the sequel.

Writers Roberto Orci, Alex Kurtzman and Damon Lindelof have been hired to pen the script to the sequel and produce.  J.J. Abrams will also be involved as a producer (as will Orci and Kurtzman), however there’s been no confirmation that he will direct.

“There’s obviously a lot of hubris involved in signing on to write a sequel of a movie that hasn’t even come out yet,” said Lindelof.  “But we’re so excited about the first one that we wanted to proceed.”

What will the storyline be?

“Obviously we discussed ideas, but we are waiting to see how audiences respond next month,” Kurtzman said. “With a franchise rebirth, the first movie has to be about origin. But with a second, you have the opportunity to explore incredibly exciting things. We’ll be ambitious about what we’ll do.”

Star Trek premieres May 8 and the sequel is tentatively slated for a US summer 2011 release.

Lucy Lawless Cast In ‘Spartacus: Blood and Sand’

Lucy Lawless & Andy Whitfield

Lucy Lawless and Andy Whitfield to star in Spartacus: Blood and Sand

Lucy Lawless (Xena: Warrior Princess / Battlestar Galactica) will join Andy Whitfield in the new live-action fantasy series Spartacus: Blood and Sand from Legend of the Seeker producers Sam Raimi and Rob Tapert.

Australian Andy Whitfield (Gabriel / McLeods Daughters) has been cast in the lead role as Spartacus, a soldier in the Roman Auxiliary who is taken prisoner and sentenced to fight as a Gladiator for defying a Roman Legate.  After multiple wins as a Gladiator, Spartacus is sold into slavery. Lawless will play Lucretia, who with her husband Batiatus, owns the slave Spartacus.

Though the rest of the cast is comprised of relative newcomers it is nonetheless impressive.  Erin Cummings (Dollhouse) will play Spartacus’ wife Sura.  Peter Mensah (300, Avatar) is Doctore, Batiatus’ most loyal and trusted slave.  Manu Bennett (30 Days of Night, The Condemned) takes on the role of Crixus – the top Gladiator. Antonio Te Maioha (Xena: Warrior Princess, Legend of the Seeker) will play Barca, Batiatus’ bodyguard and hit man.  Craig Parker (The Lord of the Rings trilogy, Legend of the Seeker) plays Glaber who blames Spartacus for his failed military campaign, and Nick E. Tarabay (Crash, The Sopranos) will play Ashur, a former gladiator who is now the Gladiator bookie.

It is reported that the show will use Zack Snyder 300 style virtual environments to recreate the Roman Republic.

The series will be produced by premium cable network Starz and promises “a new set of stories rich in character, action, sex and combat.”   Production commences April 1.

It is expected to air on Starz in January 2010.

Zack Snyder Wins ShoWest Director Of The Year Award

Zack Snyder

Zack Snyder has been named Director of the Year Award at ShoWest in recognition for his accomplishment in bringing the “unfilmable” Watchmen graphic novel to film.

Watchmen actually was one of those projects where, when I read it, I was afraid of it.  I loved it, I just wasn’t sure how it was going to be a movie,” the 43 year old Snyder said.

“For me, the process of making Watchmen and 300 into movies was about making something personal.  It’s like getting a picture of your kids and having someone say, ‘Do you want to make this into a movie?’ You know how you feel about it instantly.”

Watchmen has so far fallen below box office expectations and has, as expected, received a wide range of opinion.  Despite this, there are many who consider it an amazing work of filmmaking that few directors could equal.

“It’s a difficult movie and challenging, and some people get it and some people don’t — and that’s kind of how the graphic novel is,” he explains.

Showest is one of several motion picture industry conventions held by Nielsen Business Media’s Film Group and is considered to be one of the largest and most important gatherings of theater operators in the world.
