Stargate Magazine Interview With Michael Shanks

Stargate Magazine Issue 29

Following is an excerpt from an interview with Michael Shanks in issue 29 of ‘The Official Stargate SG-1/Atlantis Magazine’ (on sale now).

Stargate Magazine: Since it’s been a while, how happy were you with how the two Stargate movies turned out?

Michael Shanks: I was quite content with the process of both. Continuum seems to be the favored one by the people involved. It benefited from the fact that we didn’t have to resolve any ongoing arc issues. The first one [The Ark of Truth] carried a lot of baggage in terms of resolving a two-year story arc. We built up this enemy to such a degree, there was so much story to tell, and they were such a fierce antagonist that to get rid of them over two hours was a bit of a conundrum. It seemed to be a bit of a quick convenient fix to have this device that you magically open and the bad guys go away. Continuum could stand on it’s own. It was a different story and there wasn’t so much exposition. Continuum also seemed to be a lot more fun. The visuals were quite fantastic, with filming in the Arctic and the use of the jet planes. The return of Richard Dean Anderson is always fun, as well.

‘Stargate Atlantis’ Feature Film Gets A Working Title

Actual photo of the on-screen title page of Stargate: Extinction

Actual photo of the on-screen title page of Stargate: Extinction

The script for the first Stargate Atlantis movie has been completed and co-writer/executive producer Joseph Mallozzi has confirmed the official working title: Stargate: Extinction.

“It’s the working title,” Mallozzi says, “but I kind of like it because a) it’s story appropriate, b) a dynamic title, and most importantly c) not ‘Dark Gambit.’”

The storyline remains under wraps, although it is said to follow on from the events depicted in the final Stargate Atlantis episode. It has been written by Mallozzi and Paul Mullie who both worked on the final two years of the series.  Both are expected to also produce the film.

No announcement has been made regarding when the new movie will commence filming and as yet no cast members have been contacted.

Stargate Extinction will be released on DVD by MGM after it airs on SCI FI Channel in the US.

‘Stargate’ And ‘Sanctuary’ Dominate The Leo Awards

Stargate Atlantis / Sanctuary

The 11th Annual Leo Awards have just played out in Vancouver and it’s a safe bet to say the production teams behind Stargate and Sanctuary will be feeling pretty happy right about now.

Stargate Atlantis won 9 of the 17 nominations it received for its fifth and final season.  Atlantis also took home the win for the coveted ‘Best Series Award’.

The made-for-dvd movie Stargate: Continuum also won 3 of the 11 awards it was nominated for and Michael Shanks (aka Daniel Jackson) won the ‘Best Lead Actor’ award.

Sci Fi’s new series Sanctuary has pulled in 4 wins from its 10 nominations – a monumental achievement from its first seasonal run.  Sanctuary star and exec producer Amanda Tapping (who also appeared in the fifth season of Stargate Atlantis) won the Best Lead Performance award for her acting in the Sanctuary episode ‘Requiem’.  She was joined by Ryan Robbins who won the Best Guest Performance award for his role as Edward in the Sanctuary episode ‘Revelations Part 2′.

All in all the awards ceremony was an amazing night for the production teams behind Stargate and Sanctuary who collectively amassed an amazing 38 nominations and at least 16 wins (final tally to be verified once all results are in).

The Leo Awards were founded in 1999 to provide support and recognition for the work of filmmakers.

Although it was Stargate Atlantis that ruled the night, with ten nominations and four wins from only its first season you have to give a lot of credit to the cast and crew of Sanctuary.

Sanctuary follows the adventures of Dr. Helen Magnus (Amanda Tapping), forensic psychiatrist Dr. Will Zimmerman (Robin Dunne) and Magnus’ daughter Ashley (Emilie Ullerup) as together they track down, study and protect strange and sometimes terrifying creatures that secretly populate the Earth.

Sanctuary is the first television show based on an online series to ever be picked up for a second season (which will consist of 13 hour long episodes).

Production began on the second season of Sanctuary just over a month ago in Vancouver.

Although it has yet to be officially confirmed, Sanctuary is expected to return to SyFy in October 2009 where it will feature alongside Stargate Universe on Friday nights.  We’re guessing both of these series will feature heavily in the 12th Annual Leo Awards in 2010.

‘Stargate SG1′ and ‘Atlantis’ Movies Could Be Shot Back To Back

Stargate

MGM have officially turned on the green-light for a third Stargate SG-1 movie, and Executive Producer Brad Wright has confirmed an Atlantis film is still in the works.  In fact, both the third SG1 movie and the first Atlantis movie might find themselves shot back to back.

“When we start shooting the Stargate SG-1 movie depends on whether we do the two movies back-to-back,” Wright said. “The Stargate SG-1 movie will probably start shooting in the fall. I say ‘probably’ because there are a lot of deals that have to be finished being put in place before that can actually happen. That would leave the summer [of 2010] as the release time.”

Wright also added that although deals are still yet to be worked out, he still intends for the third SG-1 film to be Jack O’Neill (Richard Dean Anderson) centric as has previously been reported.

“I had a story idea that really worked with O’Neill,” Wright said. “And it’s not just his character, by any means. It’s a Stargate story that brings O’Neill back in a big way.”

Producer Joseph Mallozzi and writing partner Paul Mullie are writing the script for the Atlantis movie.  Mallozzi has confirmed they hope to have the first draft done by the end of this month (April 2009)l.

“No firm production dates for either movies,” Mallozzi said, “but if I was a betting man, I’d be looking at this fall.”

Stargate Atlantis nominated for an SFWA Nebula Award

David Hewlett in Stargate Atlantis: 'The Shrine'

David Hewlett in Stargate Atlantis: 'The Shrine'

Wall-E and The Dark Knight have dominated so many awards that it’s no surprise to see them once again nominated for a Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America Nebula Award for best script.

It is however a surprise, and a pleasant one at that, to see the third nomination for best script being handed to Stargate Atlantis for it’s sixth episode of Season 5, ‘The Shrine’.

In ‘The Shrine’ Rodney McKay (David Hewlett) is stricken with what is believed to be an alien virus that is robbing him of his memories, causing a rapid deterioration in his mind similar to Alzheimer’s disease.  The Atlantis team have to race against time to find a cure whilst McKay slips further and further towards a loss of all knowledge and memory and ultimately death.

The script to ‘The Shrine’ was written by series creator Brad Wright.  Perhaps the unsung hero of the script was Hewlett’s exceptional acting performance which was award worthy in itself.

The nominees for best Science Fiction script are:

  • The Dark Knight -- Jonathan Nolan; Christopher Nolan, Christopher, David S. Goyer (Warner Bros., Jul08)
  • WALL-E” Screenplay by Andrew Stanton, Jim Reardon, Original story by Andrew Stanton, Pete Docter (Walt Disney June 2008)
  • “The Shrine” -- Brad Wright (Stargate Atlantis, Aug08)

Winners will be announced at the 2009 Nebula Awards in Los Angeles, April 24-26, 2009.

A full list of the nominees across all categories can be viewed at Science Fiction Awards Watch here.

A mirror designed to look like the Stargate

Stargate Replica MirrorWell this is pretty mad.  This is an actual mirror designed in the shape of the Stargate that can be hung in the home.  It has a diameter of 9 3/4 inches (roughly 23 cm) which isn’t as large as I would like but hey, it’s a Stargate mirror no matter what size it is!

It comes with an insertable event horizon that has been printed on clear-blue molded plastic apparently created using the raw CGI files used from MGM’s studio.  This printed plastic snaps into place to create a really cool Stargate event horizon look.

People who have reviewed this say its very beautiful to look at.  Some people seem to think its a fan thing only, but I don’t know, the design is pretty cool.  If you’d never seen the show it would still be a very cool looking almost Egyptian style mirror if you ask me.

I think if you’re into Stargate this is a collectable must-have.  Check it out here.
