NBC has canceled plans, at least for the moment, to produce a 13-episode season of its new sci-fi thriller Day One.

The network is now planning to convert Day One into a four-hour mini-series event that will probably be aired as two separate 2-hour movies.

I’m saddened to hear this news as I truly believe Day One was shaping up to be the next big sci-fi TV series.

Transmedia Story Telling Revives Hope in ‘Day One’

The cast of 'Day One'

Last month NBC execs put a dampener on Jess Alexander’s new sci-fi series Day One by suggesting that the series may not go beyond one season.

If you missed the announcement, this is what was said by Angela Bromstad, NBC’s prime time president:

“We’ve always looked at Day One as a big event for us and not necessarily a show that would be an ongoing, returning show for a second season. It would depend on its success. Just by nature of the genre, they always then get a little narrow, and whether or not we can sustain it on the air.”

‘Sargasso Planet’ Offers Insight Into ‘Day One’

Sargasso Planet

About a week ago a package arrived in my post box from an unknown sender.  Upon opening the package I was greeted with the three items shown in the above photograph: a “Sargasso Planet” branded t-shirt, hat and badge.  The package arrived the day before I was moving house, so with the mystery in the back of my mind the box ended up being shoved in with all the other ones.

Today I pulled the box out again and was reminded about the mystery.  There was nothing to identify the items in the box save a web address on the badge:

www.sargassoplanet.com

A quick visit to the web address made it immediately apparently, from the first sentence on the site, that the items related in some way to NBC’s new alien invasion series Day One.

First Amazing Trailer For NBC’s New Sci-Fi Series ‘Day One’

Day One

The first trailer for NBC’s new sci-fi series Day One has surfaced and I have to say I’m actually blown away.

Billed as a post-apocalyptic series Day One has found its premise loosely compared to Jericho but as of now it is fair to say those comparisons just died.

The trailer is low quality as I don’t think it’s an official release, but  for now it will do to give you a glimpse at what offers the potential to be the biggest sci-fi series of 2010:

The pilot to Day One has been directed Alex Graves. Graves is a top notch director when it comes to pilots, having directed some of the best television pilots including Fringe and The Nine.  Based on this trailer it certainly looks like he might have outdone himself.

Day One takes place in the aftermath of a global event that devastates the world’s infrastructures.  A small band of survivors strives to rebuild society and unravel the mysteries of why the event took place and what the future has in store. Told from the point of view of an eclectic group of neighbors in a Van Nuys California apartment building, their journey of survival will center around the human side of the disaster and according to the series synopsis will “show us that hope is found in the smallest of victories and heroes are born every day”.

The series stars Adam Campbell (Date Movie), Catherine Dent (The Shield), Julie Gonzalo (Eli Stone), David Lyons (ER), Derek Mio (Greek), Carly Pope (24), Thekla Reuten (Sleeper Cell) and Addison Timlin (Cashmere Mafia).

Day One will air on NBC (after Chuck) on Mondays at 9-10 p.m. ET commencing in the winter of 2010.
