Defying Gravity will premiere on BBC Two in October 2009
Although the ABC has left US fans of Defying Gravity out in the cold, CTV in Canada continues to support the show. They’ll be making episode 10 available on Space on October 2nd at 8pm. Details here.
For UK fans the news is even better. BBC Two have announced that “the 13-part series will broadcast on BBC Two in October 2009.”
Hopefully their announcement really does mean all thirteen episodes will be broadcast. I actually think they will be as the odds are Defying Gravity will be better received in the UK than it was in the US, especially considering the series was inspired by the BBC drama-documentary Space Odyssey: Voyage To The Planets which was broadcast on BBC One in 2004.
The ABC might have removed Defying Gravity from its schedule but that’s not the case for Canada’s CTV. CTV are airing the pivotal episode S01E09 ‘Eve Ate the Apple’ as I write this post. I refer to episode 9 as quite pivotal since it is the one in which the true nature of the mission is revealed.
I’m very pleased about this, especially after the series kicked it up a notch at the end of episode 8 where it began expanding upon the deeper, philosophical ‘nature of the universe’ aspects of the show’s overall premise that have long been hinted at in the credits.
CTV’s airing of episode 9 is great news for all fans, even those not in Canada, for it answers the question of whether or not we’ll get to see those remaining season one episodes definitively. One way or another, we’ll get to see them. Three cheers for CTV!
I realize that a second season approval for Defying Gravity is a long shot, but I keep reminding myself that whilst the ABC have taken it off air, the series isn’t produced by the ABC…I’m going to keep hoping…
ABC orders 'Defying Gravity' to leave fans behind.
UPDATE 15/9/2009: The Futon Critic have confirmed that Nicole Marostica, publicist for Defying Gravity, has stated ABC hasn’t pulled the plug on the show completely and is still mulling scheduling options going forward. However, she gave no indication about if or when the series would return.
Well it was on the cards due to poor ratings but now its official, ABC has pulled their sci-fi series Defying Gravity from their schedule.
I think the reasons why Defying Gravity’s ratings have been poor can probably be debated until the end of time (and no doubt will be), but in the end the only thing that matters is the fact that those ratings were poor.
ABC’s Defying Gravity is my favorite sci-fi show currently on air.
Defying Gravity is set in the year 2052 and follows a group of astronauts as they undertake a six-year mission to explore the solar system aboard the spaceship ‘Antares’, a mission that has a mysterious element to it that could spell their doom.

Defying Gravity screens on ABC on Sundays at 10/9c.
Two days ago I posted an article suggesting ABC were letting their new sci-fi series Defying Gravity down through a severe lack of promotion. I love the show and have tried to promote it here at Sci Fi Scoop but have found it difficult due to a lack of promotional material.
It thus comes as no surprise to hear that due to poor ratings CTV in Canada have moved the series to the Friday doomslot. Some are also speculating ABC may do the same or worse, take it off air.
Nothing hurts the potential of a new series more than a complete lack of promotion. ABC’s new sci-fi series Defying Gravity airs only its sixth episode this Sunday but you’d hardly know it. All ABC have released is a single line synopsis that will do nothing to attract potential new viewers:
“Some crew members struggle with guilt; a serious accident puts a crew member’s life in danger.”
There you have it.

In the next episode of Defying Gravity, returning to Earth is no longer an option as the Antares crosses the point of no return. As it does the crew members will have to deal with their own points of no return.

The promo trailer is only 16 seconds long, but it stupidly gives away something that in my opinion seems quite pivotal to the whole series. Personally I wouldn’t watch the promo again had I known, but it’s up to you – you’ve been warned.
