Lost is back and boy did it return in style. Well, that’s if you have a brain. It seems Lost’s ratings have suffered and some are saying the poor ratings relate to the series displaying its sci-fi roots more than ever before.
If Lost is suffering because more of its sci-fi foundations are beginning to emerge, then I call ‘retard’ to those who are tuning out. The opener of the season, Because You Left, was simply an hour of superb story telling, drama, action, and mystery. It delved more into the time travel aspect of the series than ever before, but it did so in perfect style. Because the series places heavy emphasis on character development, it has managed to successfully mask its science fiction foundation under the ‘mainstream’ appeal of its character driven drama. By doing so it has effectively nudged potential new sci-fi fans into taking baby steps towards a love of the genre where, ironically, they will discover all good sci-fi is supported by interesting and emotionally involving characters.
Speaking of ‘good’ things, all good things must come to an end and Lost is no different. Though it may seem like it just goes on and on, Lost is in fact a plot driven story that has a beginning, middle, and a definite end. Read the rest of this entry »
