Zerks Log is great. I really love the look of it and can’t wait to see where this awesome new online sci-fi comedy leads.
Here’s episode 3:
Zerks Log 1.3 ‘Morale’
Also, be sure to check the Zerks Log website tomorrow (25th March) for the release of their tie-in graphic novel, ‘In the engine room’. Just like it sounds, it is set in the engineering section of Zerks ship, the Venturi 553. Below is a pre-release sketch (more on their site).
I love what Zerks Log creators Steve Lettieri, Rob King and Chris Conway are doing with this.
The latest episode of The Crew is out. The engine room crew are back from their trip to the Ghost Ship and have some explaining to do when it becomes evident that they are unable to look each other in the eye:
On March 16 Storyforge Labs launched a new online science fiction comedy series, Zerks Log.
Zerks Log follows the mystery behind the disappearance of Captain Zerks Ganymedewski and his ship the Venturi 553. No one knows what happened to the Captain and his ship, but the story goes that the ‘black box’ from the Venturi, containing Zerks Log, has now been found.
Over a scheduled 18 episodes we get to follow along as the eyes and ears of the investigative tribunal that is reviewing what has been found.
First, watch the teaser trailer:
Zerks Log: Teaser Trailer
Zerks Log is the brainchild of creators Steve Lettieri, Rob King and Chris Conway. It stars Ben Alpi as Captain Zerks and I have to say after seeing him in action for only one episode, I’m sold that he’s perfect for the role.
Two episodes have been released so far – 00 and 01. Episode 00 is more of a quick introduction, but now that I’ve given away the synopsis it’s not entirely necessary to watch it before seeing episode 1. Head on over to the Zerks Log Website to watch it if you want to watch the episodes in order, otherwise you can jump straight into episode 1 now:
Zerks Log: Episode 1
Although there’s only the two episodes out as yet, there’s still a few other clips on the official site that are worth watching. Check out the ‘Making of Zerks Head‘ feature which showcases special effects artist Ben Chester creating, well, Zerks head by covering Ben Alpi in goo. It’s interesting and claustrophobic at the same time. You’ll see what I mean. By the way, Chester’s special effects wizardry has also been seen in Star Trek: Voyager, Brotherhood and quite a few feature films including Doctor Dolittle.
One thing I really like about Zerks Log is that the producers clearly understand that success of an online series is boosted by not limiting it’s range to just one region. Unlike productions such as Joss Whedon’s ‘Dr. Horribles Singalong Blog’ and Virgin’s ‘Dr. Hoo’, Zerks Log is available to watch wherever you are in the world.
Also, we haven’t seen the Captains ship yet, but this view of the Venturi 553 ship from the website looks awesome:
I’ll be waiting impatiently for episode 2, this web series looks fantastic.
When Brett Register conceived the idea of The Crew, his idea was along the lines of a simple question: ‘What if The Office met Star Trek?’ The result is a made-for-web online series that episode by episode I’m rapidly falling in love with.
Although the series is produced on a mega-low budget I can already see the potential success of a big budget mainstream translation. Although if that ever happened, I’d be hoping that Brett Register would retain the helm and all the actors would go with it. Even though only three episodes are out, it’s clearly evident that the actors are growing into their roles. In fact, the way its unfolding it really does remind me a lot of how I became invested in the characters of The Office as it progressed in its early days.
Speaking of the characters, The Crew is blessed with some very talented actors and all are cast in just the right role. Philip Bache who plays Tom Wilkenson and Craig Frank as Patrick Fargent are notable and whilst I don’t really want to single any one actor out, I’m compelled to mention Amy Kline. Kline plays Jennifer Parker, the Assistant to the Chef’s in the residential area of the ship. So far she has only appeared briefly in Episode 2, but each time she scored a scene I couldn’t help but feel I was watching a future star at work. Top praise from just a few minutes of air time, I know, but she’s a natural and I’ll simply say keep your eye out for her in the future.
Each episode of The Crew is short and enjoyable and I will be looking forward to the next instalment.
For now, watch the latest episode, ‘Ghost Ship’ – this one’s the funniest yet:
The Crew is an original Koldkast.tv comedy science fiction series modelled after The Office. The first two episodes are out and are quiet enjoyable. Watch them below.
The Crew: Ep. 101 ‘Pilot’
The Crew: Ep.102 ‘The Last Romantics’
The Crew was created by Brett Register who was recently interviewed by The Warp Zone. Head on over to The Warp Zone to hear the podcast interview and learn more about this interesting series.
