Amy Kline in The Crew

Amy Kline in The Crew

When Brett Register conceived the idea of The Crew, his idea was along the lines of a simple question:  ‘What if The Office met Star Trek?’  The result is a made-for-web online series that episode by episode I’m rapidly falling in love with.

Although the series is produced on a mega-low budget I can already see the potential success of a big budget mainstream translation.  Although if that ever happened, I’d be hoping that Brett Register would retain the helm and all the actors would go with it.  Even though only three episodes are out, it’s clearly evident that the actors are growing into their roles.  In fact, the way its unfolding it really does remind me a lot of how I became invested in the characters of The Office as it progressed in its early days.

Speaking of the characters, The Crew is blessed with some very talented actors and all are cast in just the right role.  Philip Bache who plays Tom Wilkenson and Craig Frank as Patrick Fargent are notable and whilst I don’t really want to single any one actor out, I’m compelled to mention Amy Kline.  Kline plays Jennifer Parker, the Assistant to the Chef’s in the residential area of the ship.  So far she has only appeared briefly in Episode 2, but each time she scored a scene I couldn’t help but feel I was watching a future star at work.    Top praise from just a few minutes of air time, I know, but she’s a natural and I’ll simply say keep your eye out for her in the future.

Each episode of The Crew is short and enjoyable and I will be looking forward to the next instalment.

For now, watch the latest episode, ‘Ghost Ship’ – this one’s the funniest yet:
