A Look at the Stargate in ‘Stargate Universe’
Consulting producer Joseph Mallozzi has used his blog to enlighten Stargate fans about the operation of the new gate aboard the Destiny in Stargate Universe.
He’s posted concept art images, photo’s from the set, videos and copies of documents explaining how the gate works. I’ve collected the most interesting ones into this article (below).
First, watch a video of the gate in operation on set:
The following describes how the gate will work (one of the images in the gallery is of a process document that shows this in operation). Note that the 36 symbols on the Stargate are not graphic representations of star constellations as were the case in Stargate: SG1 and Stargate: Atlantis. Instead they reflect the names the Ancients who built the Destiny had for specific stars (how this works to specify an address is unclear).
The lights on the chevrons ALL power when the gate is activated, the star names light as each one ‘locks’ under the floor. The entire gate spins rather than just the inner ring.
As they lock they appear on a flatscreen (in the floor) and move down as each new name appears until all seven names in the address are displayed.
At this point the steam vents in the floor open and blast steam as the gate kawooshes.
When on away missions a handheld remote control device will be used to control the Kino ball as well as dial the gate for return to Destiny.

I’m sorry, but SGU looks like a steaming pile right out of the shoot. Enough of the Forever Emo nonsense. How about less Shakey Cams, Angst, Despair, Dysfunction, and MORE Plot, Action, Heroics, and dare I say it, something that actually looks like Stargate?

Stargate Universe looks to me like EASILY being the best of the three. All I’m hoping for is that they don’t have medieval villages every second episode like Atlantis and SG1. Everything I’ve seen of Universe so far looks superb.
