Two months ago we learned that Robert Luketic (Monster in Law / Legally Blonde) had taken the directors chair for a remake of the 1968 erotic sci-fi classic Barbarella.

The latest news is that Joe Gazzam has been hired to write the new screenplay.

Gazzam’s new take on the film will be to focus primarily on the adventure, to lose the campy side of it, but to keep the sexuality.

Little is known about Gazzam’s writing ability as nothing he has written has yet graced our screens.

Barbarella: Queen of the Galaxy was based on a popular French comic strip. The original film followed heroine Barbarella (Jane Fonda), a 41st century mercenary who lands on the planet Lythion and sets out to find the evil Durand Durand in the city of Sogo, where a new sin is invented every hour.

The film was huge thanks to the presence of Jane Fonda, so naturally the big question is who will take on her famous role? The Hollywood Reporter have a poll running and at present Jessica Biel is leading the fan vote with Mila Kunis second and Scarlett Johansson third.  Robert Rodriguez’s well known pick of Rose McGowan isn’t included in the poll, nor is Tricia Helfer who, after appearing in the Battlestar Galactica girls Barbarella makover for GQ (image above, click to enlarge), is surely a contender.

The remake will be produced by the same producer of the original film,  Dino De Laurentiis, along with his wife, Martha De Laurentiis.

No further details are available.
