Robert Rodriguez has long been talking about remaking the 1968 erotic sci-fi classic Barbarella – that is until last week when he announced he would no longer be a part of it.

His reason reportedly related to nothing other than the fact that Universal Studio’s wanted to shoot the picture in Germany and Rodriguez wanted to stay in Austin with his family.

With Rodriguez bailing on the project everyone thought the remake was dead, until EW reported that director Robert Luketic (Monster In Law / Legally Blonde) had stepped in to fill the seat left warm by Rodriguez.

Dino De Laurentiis’ company apparently own the rights to Barbarella and EW’s sources say Luketic is working closely with them to develop the picture with a different studio. We’re not sure what that means for now, other than the fact that Barbarella looks like going ahead after all.

Barbarella: Queen of the Galaxy was based on a popular French comic strip.  It follows heroine Barbarella (Jane Fonda), a 41st century astronaut, who lands on the planet Lythion and sets out to find the evil Durand Durand in the city of Sogo, where a new sin is invented every hour. From there the film more or less progresses to find ways to tear Jane Fonda’s already virtually non-existent clothing off in a variety of creative ways.

The question on everybody’s lips is who will reprise Jane Fonda’s most famous role? Those are some big boots, erm, shoes to fill – and be removed.

No further details are available and for the record, Jane Fonda is now aged 71.
