Battle: Los Angeles, A Sci-Fi Black Hawk Down

Aaron Eckhart stars as the Clint Eastwood-ish Platoon Leader in Battle:Los Angeles
Whilst the plot outline for Battle: Los Angeles might sound a little one dimensional (about a marine platoon that fights off an alien invasion in Los Angeles), the more I hear about this upcoming sci-fi actioner the more I want to see it.
The movie will star Aaron Eckart (aka Two-Face in The Dark Knight) and will be directed by Jonathan Liebesman (Darkness Falls / The Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning / The Killing Room).
MTV Movies Blog have posted some insightful information that has raised my interest. In their article Liebesman describes Eckhart’s character as like a “Clint Eastwood-esque platoon leader” and the film as like “28 Days Later” and “Black Hawk Down“. Liebesman also mentions that to make the aliens in the film highly original, he took the unusual move to seek out undiscovered artists on the internet.
From MTV Movies Blog:
“This is like Paul Greengrass got a camera, saw some aliens, and shot it from the point of view of a platoon,” Liebesman revealed, invoking the name of the Bourne Supremacy director famed for his hand-held, adrenaline-fueled action sequences. “It’s literally like Black Hawk Down, if there were aliens in there. Like Iraqi war footage, but with aliens running around.”
“I’ve found some artists on the Internet whose artwork was amazing,” gushed Liebesman. “[Their work] blew everyone away, and fortunately hadn’t been discovered.”
“We are doing our best to do something that hasn’t been done before,” said 29-year-old South African born director Jonathan Liebesman, best known for getting gory with “Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning” in 2006. “This is a more down and dirty alien movie. This isn’t like ‘Independence Day.’”
“This is a movie I would be lining up on Friday to see,” exclaimed the enthusiastic director, promising additional casting will be coming soon. “That’s why I am so excited; it’s a movie I would love to go and watch.”
Battle: Los Angeles is still in its early days and although no release date has been set, Columbia Pictures are aiming for some time (probably late) in 2010.
Aaron Eckhat is presently the only cast member on board, although it is expected casting calls will ramp up shortly as Liebesman has already begun shooting test footage.
Additionally Brian Tyler is on board as the films music composer. With his score to Stallone’s Rambo blasting across my headphones as I write this article, and thinking of this movie as a sci-fi hybrid of 28 Days Later meets Black Hawk Down, I can only say I’m keen.
