Bryan Singer eyeing the directors chair of 'X-Men: First Class'

Bryan Singer (Superman Returns / X-Men) will be directing a Battlestar Galactica feature film for Universal Pictures, but not yet.

It seems his next directing effort will most likely be a remake of Jack the Giant Killer for New Line and Legendary Pictures, a version of the Jack and the Beanstalk fable that revolves around a young farmer who leads an expedition into the land of the giants to recover a kidnapped princess.

Will Battlestar Galactica be his next directing vehicle after Jack the Giant Killer?  Possibly not.  As yet there is no script for Galactica, which is to be a complete re-imagining of the franchise.

Singer has also just struck a deal with Warner Bros. to produce a remake of Excalibur, one that he may also direct. He’s also considering the possibility of returning to the X-Men franchise by directing the 20th Century Fox X-Men prequel, X-Men: First Class.

Of all these film’s I’m perhaps more interested in X-Men: First Class, only because “prequel” isn’t quite as dirty a word as “remake”.

Regardless, Singer’s slate is pretty full so it appears fans eager to see a new version of Battlestar Galactica are going to have to wait.

Bearing in mind that getting a script completed, pre-production Art Design, Costume Design, Set Design and Construction, casting, etc, etc, etc. It’s no surprise that an A-List Director like Singer would have other projects in the pipeline, along with the TOS Universe based Battlestar Galactica Feature.

Even in a best case scenerio, cameras wouldn’t be expected to start rolling til a year from now, at the very earliest, as this will most likely not be a quick and dirty, every colony looks like Vancouver, or all the Costumes look like JC Pennys off the rack approach to BSG. Plenty of time for Singer to complete his work on Jack the Giant Killer. After the initial pre-production groundwork has been completed for Battlestar Galactica, Singer would be ready to Direct. There really is no need to a Director to have to micromanage the Pre-Production process

Jack the Giant Killer has had a script for some time, written by Mark Bomback. Much of the early groundwork was begun months and months ago, under the previous Director D.J. Caruso. Presumably Neal Moritz is still Producing, so this would not be Singer having to start from scratch.

As for the last comment, “because “prequel” isn’t quite as dirty a word as “remake”.” Strange, I don’t remember that being applied to Moore’s Galactica, I must have missed that.

There are sooooo many remakes nowadays that “remake” is a dirty word. Plenty of Larson fans applied it to Moore’s BSG. Plenty of Moore fans will apply it to Singer’s BSG. My view? It’s not a dirty word, it’s a FILTHY word.

Just to point out, my comment about “remakes” was meant to be more general than Battlestar specific, made in a month where I had to write many articles about old movies being remade. The comment stems not from a whining about Battlestar as much as it does from my being sick of hearing more about remakes than new original films.

Whilst many great and original ideas gather dust, remakes of stories already told are getting millions thrown at them which is very frustrating, especially for creative writers who struggle to have their original work considered because of the financial risk evaluation machine.

For the record, I loved the original Battlestar and I loved Moore’s Battlestar. I am, however, not a “fanboy” of anything to the exclusion of anything else. I will most definitely head to the theater to see Singer’s Battlestar BUT I would prefer to head to the theater to see an original sci-fi film than the third version of a good story.
