Nicolas Cage only bowed out of the running to play the villain in Michel Gondry’s upcoming The Green Hornet a week ago but his replacement has already been announced.

According to Nikki Finke, Austrian actor Christoph Waltz has won the role.

Waltz impressed a ton of people and won the Cannes Film Festival award for ‘Best Actor’ for his portrayal of the Nazi Colonel Hans Landa in Inglourious Basterds.

Although the announcement has not been made official yet, I think Waltz is actually a superior choice to Cage for the role of the villain, so it’s nice to see something going right for the production.

Based upon the original radio series, The Green Hornet follows newspaper publisher Britt Reid (Seth Rogen) who fights crime as the masked superhero ‘Green Hornet’ alongside his martial arts expert Kato (Jay Chou).

Additional cast members include Cameron Diaz and Battlestar Galactica’s Edward James Olmos.

The Green Hornet is slated for release December 17, 2010.
