CTV in Canada Continues to Air ‘Defying Gravity’

Defying Gravity goes fractal

Defying Gravity goes fractal in Episode 8

The ABC might have removed Defying Gravity from its schedule but that’s not the case for Canada’s CTV.  CTV are airing the pivotal episode S01E09 ‘Eve Ate the Apple’ as I write this post.  I refer to episode 9 as quite pivotal since it is the one in which the true nature of the mission is revealed.

I’m very pleased about this, especially after the series kicked it up a notch at the end of episode 8 where it began expanding upon the deeper, philosophical ‘nature of the universe’ aspects of the show’s overall premise that have long been hinted at in the credits.

CTV’s airing of episode 9  is great news for all fans, even those not in Canada, for it answers the question of whether or not we’ll get to see those remaining season one episodes definitively.  One way or another, we’ll get to see them.  Three cheers for CTV!

I realize that a second season approval for Defying Gravity is a long shot, but I keep reminding myself that whilst the ABC have taken it off air, the series isn’t produced by the ABC…I’m going to keep hoping…

ABC had announced that they weren’t actually cancelling Defying Gravity, but were trying to figure out where to put it into the schedule to improve its ratings.

They’d said they were planning on showing all the episodes of the first season.

109 was a good ep, I cannot find any info on space or ctv or the internet in general for the airing of 110 or later eps…

ctv has replaced DG with Flashpoint in the fri 10pm timeslot…

they had better finish the season.

this is a show that i plan on getting on dvd along with Sanctuary

Good news! and yeah on a 2nd season – but at least to see the last 4 episodes 9or 5 if not seen #9) – still trying to at least show support – http://defyinggravity.wetpaint.com/page/Save+Our+Show+-+Beta+Siren+Call

Just Watched Ep9 wow amazing ep, it gets better and better i love it, i do hope there is a season 2.

Way to go ABC! Now you’re giving people who actually care about Defying Gravity the push they need to download the programme illegally, just so they can continue to watch it. Now ladies and gentlemen, this is how you lose your advertising revenue and alienate your viewer base!

Perhaps if they’d hyped the hell out of it and actually done more than just minimal promotion, then the show would have stood more of a chance. I just hope that another, more enlightened network, picks up the series and makes it the success story it deserves to be.

  7. FoxPt Dave said:

This is just one more reason NETWORK’s like ABC are making me switch to cable. They are willing to pay a morning show host 12 million dollars a year…and then promote her to the nightly news spot, for covering “breaking news” stories like who did well on IDOL or DANCING WITH THE STARS…yet are afraid to take a chance on a show like DEFYING GRAVITY. Guess who’s NOT going to be watching the nightly news much longer!

  8. ardonut said:

does anyone know of a site that is hosting episode 09 on line so that we can watch it in the US?

  9. craig said:

This is good news! Way to go CTV! I’m in the US, so I haven’t seen 1×09, but it sounds like a killer ep! I too really hope that the production company is able to find a network willing to air/fund a 2nd season. This was the one show on that I actually couldn’t wait to see every week. I have my whole extended family hooked on it, so I’ll be very sad, if it doesn’t find a new home.

Hey, you hopeful people, remember the ABC series titled “Nine” a couple of years back? Fabulous plot line, good acting, totally logical and engaging. Then ABC cancelled after the first 5 (if I remember correctly) and the remaining episodes of the 9 were never seen again, anywhere. Never trust ABC; do not buy stuff from their advertisers.

  11. chris said:

No so fast, people, we are sep25th and there is no defying gravity on ctv

this is a website i use all the time to watch shows and they seem to be uploading the new episodes of Defying Gravity as they come out:
    http://www.viptv.net

you have to buy $F which means friendster dollars, but it only costs a few cents per episode! hope this helps!!! they have TONS of other shows on here too and are often quicker to post them than Hulu.

only two drawbacks I can see: i don’t know if the ratings count, and it’s not as high res as some sites… but it works for me!!

  13. Mark said:

Sigh, another good show cancelled prematurely, lets add it to the list,

    My own worst enemy
    life on mars
    jericho
    dollhouse(almost)
    and now
    defying gravity

and probably a couple more i can’t remember offhand all in the past year. Don’t they realize it takes a little bit of time to build a fanbase? Obivously there isnt going to be 10 million views in the first 10 episodes, for gods sake. I’m getting really pissed of at the tv networks. Lets all watch season 19 of surivior why dont we.

  14. Bill said:

The episodes are available at ch131.com (CTV’s website) for
free. Right now they only have up to episode 9, but I am sure as they air the others they will put them up. All you have to do is click on the shows button on the left side and you will see the list of shows, then click on defying gravity and there you will see the episodes. The website looks a little cheap, but they got our show and it plays great so I am happy

ABC has dug a deep gash in my viewing life (Nine,L.O.M, etc). NBC kill LIFE the only show on their network with. Now ABC in the middle of summer sparks a gem and they see we all are watching they stick back in their pocket like a selfish child. BRING BACK DEFYING GRAVITY. I was so happy to hear Canada was showing it and the UK.

BRING BACK DEFYING GRAVITY………there are not many episodes left

  17. Thradar said:

My wife and I were really getting in to this show. Sadly, it’s not another Desperate Housewives or Dancing with the Stars so I knew it was doomed from the start. Why can’t SciFi (I refuse to call it by the new name) pick up some of these shows instead of showing Big Snake vs Big Croc 23?

  18. FoxPt Dave said:

Well, this message is to all you big network executives out there. I finally went out and got CABLE…you made me do it! As may of the viewers have stated, it sometimes takes a few months for a show to kick in…for ratings and word of mouth referrals to increase a show’s popularity. And, as pointed out, a number of shows were axed too soon, in part for what I feel was ill-timed introductions, timeslots, or lack of advertising. Now, with cable, Ill have a lot more choices…and won’t have to put up with overpriced networks pulling a plug on a good show because they couldn’t get enough revenue from toothpaste commercials to pay for their overpriced salaries. DEFYING GRAVITY was really starting to develop, yet ABC aborted it before it even began to kick. Maybe if you had advertised the show, and given it a better timeslot, it would have lasted. I know I would have, instead of now going to 220 channels and saying GOODBYE to the majority of network TV.

    Mark,

Life on Mars was only 2 seasons in the UK, and I don’t think it was meant to be anything more than that in North America. It pretty much stuck to the same storyline as the UK, although the ending was VASTLY different.

It was born out of the Writer’s strike, and they did it back in the 80’s also. Easier stealing from other writers than to have to come up with something creative on your own…

I was able to watch Episode 9 (Eve Ate the Apple) on http://ch131.com, as well as several other shows like HUNG and CALIFORNICATION. Not all episodes of the older shows are on it…but it seems like all of DEFYING GRAVITY is being carried. And yes, it was a good episode…ABC took it off the air one week too soon…had this episode aired, I think it would have caught a few peoples attention to bring the ratings up a bit.

  26. Jo said:

    Thanks Piper!

I was out of town and missed episode 10 – not realizing it had been cut – and went on line to see if it was available. I saw your message 10 minutes before the show started. And I agree that episode 9 tied it all together – and made the series better.

It’s not really about advertising and time slots these days.

What the ABC’s of the world need to learn in the 21st century is how to do niche internet and mobile device marketing of video, just as magazines developed incredibly diverse niches in the last century.

Defying Gravity definitely has a niche of viewers. I found myself watching it online on my computer, to avoid the aggressive TV advertising experience; and I was happy to sit through the much more soft 15-30 second online ads.

ABC needs to wake up and realise that if it is going to survive, it needs to cultivate and go after these nice viewers on myriad fronts and on a highly diverse array of video platforms.

Hopefully “SyFy” (oh brother on that new spelling…) will pick it up and produce it.

The direct web site for the Defying Gravity online streams is http://www.ch131.com/dgseason1.htm

Although it has had the ‘Episode 10 will be posted tonight’ message for two days now…

    cheers

For all the fans out there. DG has been playing on Space in Canada throughout. Episode 12 aired tonight with the final episode airing next Friday at 8pm.

Also, all the episodes up to 11 can be downloaded on iTunes. The new episode is usually available the Monday after it airs. : )

Right now it’s the 40 best selling show on iTunes in Canada in a list of 200.

I really REALLY hope that they bring this into season two… the story is evolving to be a really well written human drama (in space) which as i see it, is dealing with issues such as human nature, psychology, a dash of spirituality and how all these people floating through space in a tin can have to deal with all of that.

… and having seen the season finale just now, it literally brought tears to my eyes. it was incredibly well done, my applause for the team of the show. if they are canceled, know that they did a spectacular job and they should be very proud.

This is one of the best shows in the recent years. Too bad it was not in a more accessible time slot, which explains the low audience. It also had a slow start, building up the characters and the plot. I really hope it wil be there for more seasons so we can enjoy the discovery of this rich plot line.

The first show I have actually been excited about in years… and they cancel it!

The last one was Firefly… and they canceled that one too.

The problem wasn’t the show… it was poorly promoted and scheduled… starting a serial in the Summer schedule is suicide!

And their ladies were way hotter than Desperate Housewives. Attractive women with brains and drive… what a concept!

Back to the endless Cop/Doctor/Lawyer shows (sigh!)

  38. fabledgoat said:

not sure, I may have been wrong but there may also be another episode this week. : P though I thought there were only 3 episodes, the call the 2 hour premier as both Ep1 and 2. Last weeks episode didn’t end like a finale either so it’ll be interesting to see if there’s one more for this Friday.

loving the show myself. I haven’t seen anything online about them breaking the set down. Will have to do a search and see what I find.

  39. dana said:

I can’t believe they killed the show. there was no promotion. What numbers did they expect to get?
i accidentally caught the first episode (in the middle of it).the show was never meant to be serious space drama but was indeed very very entertaining. I never liked Grey’s anatomy and i don’t think the two shows have anything in common, apart from the monologue at the end of each show.
so sorry there is no season 2. and they killed it with a cliffhanger.

  40. fabledgoat said:

yup, tonight looks like it’s just the first episode again. and it did have a great end to the first season. I was hoping to see what was going to happen with a number of the characters.

Space seems to be doing good with it though. They’ve kept it at the 8pm Friday timeslot throughout the run.

  41. amanda said:

Please stay with it SPACE!!! I love this show and I don’t enjoy too many scifi shows. I think its a great show and second season should be bought and aired!!!!!

there is this website called CH131 you can check it out. i have seen all 13 episodes.

really great show, one thing that annoys me is shows like LOST for instant that makes no sense they still seem to run it but freat shows like this they never ever give them a chance. which makes me soo mad.

  43. RunRun said:

I loved this show. I’m hoping to see a season 2 as they left us hanging at the end of season 1. The whole premise of life aboard a space ship that includes romance, conflict, morals, beliefs make this show not just a space show, but an emotional involvement with the characters. The fact that there is an alien mystery involved just seems to add that little bit of intrigue and spice. I just enjoy the different setting that this show provides, as I am tired of the tried and true genre of Doctors, ER’s, lawyers, cops, CSI’s etc…. We need a Sci-Fi show that appeals to all groups of people, be they techies, nerds, romantics and action hero’s. Defying Gravity offers all of the above.

  44. meagain said:

Well i have to say after watching the whole lot almost back to back, and being glued to the telly for a day or so TOP QUALITY..I think ABC suck why get rid of it? that has to be one of the best things i have seen in some time, so much so i had to download the lot. Its a shame it had to come to that but lifes funny that way with the big wig twats thinking they know what the public want when all they want is what pleases them. just goes to show what the public want and asks for we never get, and what we dont want we get like crappy soaps like eastender and emmerdale could go on about the rest of the crap but wasting my words on no body that matters so all enjoy season 2, if it ever comes.

    Hi,

My family and I just watched all 13 episodes of Defying Gravity (available on iTunes in HD). All of us, from my 7 year old son and 10 year old daughter to my 40 something wife and I loved it.

It was a real bummer last night when I read on Wikipedea that no second season was in the cards.

Great characters, rich plot with many themes and perhaps most importantly, timely attention to space exploration as our planet heats up.

It looks like the networks doomed this series to failure with their mid-summer launch, weird timeslots, and partial series airing. The show deserves another shot.

Is there an official petition website? My family and I will surely sign it.

    Cheers,
    Chris

If you want to watch it online (legally and free!!) google bbc iplayer, whole season 1 will be on their shortly in high quality not some crappy rip too. Also as its legal and the BBC have paid for the rights to do this it shows real support for the programme and might help to keep it being produced and shown.

  48. Paul said:

I watched every episode that was on Space. Finally some science fiction that was intelligent; of course that’s probably why it didn’t do well, not enough aliens! I hope there is a season two and more.

  49. degs said:

In the UK all 13 episodes were shown, I thought it was a great show, I read the negative critics and I like the flash back as it helped to indruduce the players and set up the story. I watch LOST and was lost, I think this is better by far and I hope some TV exec allows series 2, if only to finish the story. I am a big fan of good scifi, this was good SciFi.

  50. Barbara said:

I also watched all 13 episodes via the BBC (who insulted viewers by putting it on at all sorts of unsociable hours of the night) and was hooked. I also was looking forward to series 2. The characters are rounded and the interactions and dilemmas posed give rise for thought (the world is not all black and white) reminding me of the moral choices and rounded characters of the 24 Series. But society is too shallow for anything but reality TV it would seem!
