Spike Jonze’s Where the Wild Things Are had its moment at the San Diego Comic-Con on Friday.

The panel was introduced with a video from author Maurice Sendak, one that you can watch below.  In it he pays homage to director Spike Jonze and you can also see a few snippets of footage from the film:

Max Records, the 11 year old actor who plays Max in the film, then shared his experiences on the film from notes written on his palm.

“Wow, this is a lot of people,” he said. “I haven’t really done anything like this before.”

“A lot of people ask what it was like working with Spike,” Max said. “Instead of acting, he wanted real emotions, so in the middle of shooting a scene where I’m supposed to act surprised he got a huge propane tank and lit a huge flame over me. And it kinda worked.”

Watch a short video of him below, sure to make you laugh:

Four complete scenes from the film were screened.

In the first scene, Max wakes in the arms of a Wild Thing named Carol (James Gandolfini).   They then both explore the forest together with Carol explaining everything they see is his – everything except a hole in a tree and a rock.

The second scene shows Max and Carol walking through the desert together, with Carol sadly explaining that things aren’t going well in this part of the kingdom.  Max tells him the sun will die one day, then Carol comforts him by exclaiming “Look at me!  I’m big!  How can big guys like you and me worry about a tiny little thing like the sun up there?”

The third scene was of Max and and the Wild Things falling asleep, with Wild Thing KW (Lauren Ambrose) asking Max if he ate his family.

In the fourth scene Max and the Wild Things build a huge fortress.

All the reports from those in attendance are filled with sheer positivity.  This will no doubt be one of the best films of the year.
