Director Kevin Tancharoen Talks Sci-Fi Actioner ‘Arcana’
Kevin Tancharoen, who directed the Fame remake for MGM, has an interesting way of describing his next feature film, a sci-fi actioner titled Arcana.
“Arcana is a unique blend of the graphic-novel backdrop – like Blade Runner – and shot like 300, and has a little bit of Warriors mixed in there, with a little bit of martial arts, so it’s got a lot of crazy elements in there,” Tancharoen says.
“It’s going to be really cool. We’re writing it right now actually – a guy named John Ridley is writing it.”
John Ridley wrote U-Turn, Three Kings, a number of episodes of Third Watch, and more recently the screenplay for George Lucas’ Red Tails, a story about the first African-American pilots to fly in a combat squadron during World War II.
“I’m very happy we got him,” Tancharoen says.
Tancharoen also appeared as a dancer in the 2004 film You Got Served, to which he makes a humorous reference.
“I’m first a comic and video-game nerd…Who got into dancing somehow,” he laughs.
X-Men: The Last Stand director Brett Ratner’s Rat Entertainment is producing for Universal Pictures.
Arcana is presently slated for release on July 22, 2010, though I’m guessing if the film is going to successfully blend all of the elements Tancharoen mentions, this release date may end up getting pushed way out.
