This is definitely one of the coolest things I’ve seen in a long time -- the theme to Doctor Who and the Imperial March from Star Wars created via what is essentially a Lightning Bolt. Watch for yourself:

Another clip (A better Doctor Who music clip starts at 6:40 mark)

The show is created by ArcAttack who have created what they term as the ‘Singing Tesla Coils’, a setup that electrically generates sound (and obviously visuals too) based upon Nikola Tesla’s famous invention.  Well, it should be famous.

Basically these coils produce electrical arcs that are the equivalent of lightning bolts.  The arcs create a distorted square wave similar to the sound of a synthesizer, which is then synchronized to music.  The result is the sound of the arc creates a unique electronic rendition of the music.

Joe DiPrima and Oliver Greaves are the masterminds behind the design and construction of the coils whilst the music is developed by John DiPrima and Tony Smith.

Incidentally, if you don’t know anything about Nikola Tesla, you should.  Nikola Tesla was arguably the greatest mind that ever existed in the history of humanity and his contributions to mankind are as great as any name you can imagine.  Nikola Tesla’s ideas and inventions more than a century ago are still considered science fiction by many people even today.  If you haven’t heard of Nikola Tesla, I highly recommend watching the following video which offers a great introduction to his story:
