Dollhouse Ends With A Ratings Slump

Dollhouse

The finale of Joss Whedon’s Dollhouse may have sealed the ailing series’ fate.

Episode 1.12 ‘Omega’ saw a ratings drop of 11 percent giving Dollhouse an all time series-low viewership of only 2.76 million.  If ever Dollhouse needed rallying to convince Fox the series was worth renewing, the finale was it – but it was not to be.

It’s been a long wait but in 8 days we’ll hear about the fate of Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles.  There was a time not so long ago when it seemed Terminator’s cancellation was a foregone conclusion and a Dollhouse renewal was on the cards.  How things change.

On one hand you have a series with falling ratings that is losing fans.  On the other you have a series with improving ratings and a growing legion of fans actively campaigning for its renewal.  Perhaps Fox now have an easier decision on their hands when it comes to letting Dollhouse go and, in turn, have an easier decision when it comes to renewing Terminator.

We’ll find out one way or the other on May 18.

Allow me to play Devils Advocate:

Okay, so, I understand getting worked up over the loss of a favorite show. I get that, I really do! It’s like losing that hot chocolate you curl up with on a sad weekday night and let yourself get lost in.

Okay, weird analogy, but you get the picture. What I’m trying to say is: Why can’t you simply accept the choices of a board of directors, who are concious of the profit margin, who have access to all the numbers and statistics, and trust that they’re doing – ultimately- what is best for their company?

Sure, it’s at the expense of you, the viewer, but would you really do any differently in their shoes?

The truth is that both TSCC and DH’s ratings were a rollercoaster of movement, from the high-of-highs, to almost six feet under. When your final numbers for a series ( and not just a single episode, keep this in mind- if an episode airs during the usperbowl, you can imagine what the ratings would look like), are practically the same, you haev to make a choice.

At the end of the day, do you choose the writer/producer who has pumped out loooong running series Buffy the Vampire Salyer, with spin offs such as Angel; more tv spots than you can shake a stick at; moveies; written screen plays for amazingly popular movies ( Titan A.E., or Toy Story, anyone?)… or do you choose the writer od Dark Angel ( which, c’mon, was eye candy), the Terminator series ( or a good chunk of it, anyways), and Titanic (personal note: gag)?

Truly, it’s a tough call. Talented writers to the left and right, and only one spot open. Just because you could make a choice easily due to your following the show, doesn’t mean that Fox had it as easy. Watching the show doesn’t cost you thousands- it does for them.

P.s.: I in no way endorse Fox for any other reason than they produce some good shows. This does not in any way mean they aren’t an evil, evil corporation ( possibly developing some form of Virus…).
