Duncan Jones’ ‘Mute’ Mired With Financing Problems
Duncan Jones impressed the sci-fi world with his indie hit Moon and, as a result, has many fans eager to see what he can do with his next Blade Runner style sci-fi film, Mute.
Mute is described as “very human” sci-fi story that takes place in a very normal but futuristic city. It follows a mute bartender who goes head to head with the city’s gangsters as he attempts to find out what happened to his missing partner.
The first concept art (above) emerged last month when at the same time Liberty Films (who released the above image) listed the project as “in pre-production” and scheduled to shoot in Berlin early 2010.
The latest news isn’t so promising, with reports surfacing that Mute is experiencing its share of financing struggles.
Here’s a snippet from Australia’s The Age:
Mute, which requires a larger budget than the logistically concise Moon, is mired in financing difficulties, although Jones is sanguine about events.
He believes that if there weren’t difficulties getting it made, then he must have got something wrong.
”Every problem,” he points out like a scientist happily positing a theorem, ”is proof that we’re planning a movie very different from the norm.”
I’m guessing Jones struggled with financing Moon and Mute’s struggles probably aren’t any different, just on a larger scale. Let’s hope those struggles ultimately still lead Jones to his next even more successful sci-fi film.
Mute is presently tabled for release in 2011.
