‘Fissure’ Webisode 9: What Body?
Fissure follows Detective Paul Grunning (James MacDonald), a man with a tragic past who finds himself on what is meant to be a routine call out – only it is far from routine. Instead he finds himself investigating a possible murder amongst strange circumstances that force him to question his perception of reality.
For the past nine weeks director Russ Pond has been releasing short webisodes that combined follow the first 35 minutes of the film. On Monday the ninth webisode, titled ‘What Body?’,’ was released a day ahead of the film’s DVD debut. Yes, the full film is now available on DVD.

Although Fissure may appear to be a cop mystery-drama on the surface level, it is most definitely a sci-fi film. It does however place the sci-fi aspects of itself secondary to the characters and, in particular, James MacDonald’s character Detective Grunning. In fact it would be fair to say that the entire film is less about the mystery and more about what it all means to Grunning’s life and his chance at finding redemption for his past mistakes.
This is where Fissure shines, evidenced by its win of the ‘Redemptive Storyteller Award’ at the Redemptive Film Festival in September 2008. MacDonald, who has appeared in big name TV series including Jericho, Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, 24, JAG, CSI, Cold Case, also won the ‘Best Actor Award’ at the First Glance Film Festival in 2008 for his portrayal of the mentally torn Grunning. It was a deserving award because whilst there are a number of characters in the film, he essentially carries the redemptive themed story from beginning to end.
“One of my primary goals for the film was to tell a story with a redemptive theme,” Pond said. “Our philosophy from the beginning has been ‘movies with a message’.”
