Ryan Reynolds as Wade Wilson (Deadpool) in X-Men Origins: Wolverine

Fox have officially announced development of the X-Men Origins: Wolverine spinoff movie Deadpool.

Ryan Reynolds, who played Wade Wilson and Deadpool in Wolverine, will reprise his character in the spinoff movie.

*Spoilers below if you haven’t seen X-Men Origins: Wolverine*

In Wolverine, Ryan Reynolds plays the “merc with a mouth” that, towards the end of the film, undergoes a major transformation that includes having his mouth sewn shut.  The latest report indicates that Reynolds would regain the ability to talk again in the spinoff movie.  Fox states the movie will go back to the roots of the character.

It is however unclear how far the character will be wound back compared to his change in Wolverine, where he gained a variety of new powers and became largely disfigured.  There is speculation that the movie could be a prequel, though this is rumor only as the project has yet to tap a writer.

If you’re wondering how a non prequel Deadpool movie can be made (since Reynolds’ character was killed at the end of Wolverine) then you’ve been unlucky enough to miss the ‘easter egg’ at the end credits in some theater showings.  At the very end of the credits are a number of additional scenes, and in one of these Deadpool is shown alive and reaching to claim back his severed head.

No other details are to hand at this time.
