Season 4 of Heroes will be shorter than Season 3.  NBC is apparently planning to cut the next season down by 5-7 episodes.

Season 3 included 25 episodes, but according to a report by Ad Age, the next season will have only 18-20.

The first reason given is that NBC needs to cut back on costs to account for eroding ratings.  A second reason given is “story-line issues” and a third blames the 2008 writers strike for why ad spending on the program has suffered.

Adrian Pasdar (aka Nathan Petrelli) has stated to TV Guide that shooting only 18 episodes will be a “relief.”

“If things start shifting around, they can always add more at the end, but doing 25 episodes this year was nearly 11 months of work,” Pasdar said. “We love the work, but in order for the quality to be maintained, you can’t just keep grinding it out.”

“This will make it better for everybody, and ultimately for the viewers,” he said. “It will be a more streamlined version of a show that’s very complex. It will still maintain its complexity, but I think it will be easier to follow.”
