Interview With ‘Moon’ Director Duncan Jones
Indie sci-fi film Moon tells the story of Astronaut Sam Bell (Sam Rockwell) who has spent nearly three years working alone on the Moon save for his only companion, a computer named GERTY (voiced by Kevin Spacey). His job has been to collect and send back to Earth parcels of a resource that are used to deminish the planet’s power problems. As Sam nears the end of his time on the Moon he encounters something unexpected that threatens to change his life completely.
Moon is the first full-length feature film from Director Duncan Jones and one of our most highly anticipated films of the year. In a recent interview, Jones tells Sci Fi Love that the human themes behind the story were built with a great deal of inspiration and experience from his own life.
“When I was writing the script, I was going through a heart-wrenching long-distance relationship that was never going to work, and a lot of those feelings came out in the script,” Jones says. “So did a lot of feelings and things I went through growing up.”
“I probably wear my heart on my sleeve with this film. Its obviously not about lasers or explosions, it’s not about monsters or alien races. It’s about people. How they work, what makes them tick, and how hard it can be to be one sometimes.”
We already knew that Jones was a big fan of Blade Runner and that he plans to make a Blade Runner style sci-fi film next. Jones adds that many of the old school sci-fi classics such as Alien, Silent Running and Outland contributed to his inspiration.
“Those films and others like them told human stories in future environments. I’ve always wanted to make a film that felt like it could fit into that canon.
“People who appreciate science fiction want the best for the world, but they understand that there is an education to be had by investigating the worst of what might happen. That’s why Blade Runner was so brilliant; it used the future to make us look at basic human qualities from a fresh perspective. Empathy. Humanity.”
Visit Sci Fi Love to read the rest of the interview, where Jones talks about his close relationship with actor Sam Rockwell and the difficulties in producing a high quality and ambitious film on a budget of just £5million. Note that the interview is part one – the second part has yet to be posted.
