James Cameron on ‘Battle Angel’ – Yes, But Not Now

It has been more than four years since the announcement that James Cameron’s first major film project since Titanic would be a big budget sci-fi film titled Battle Angel.

Two years after the initial announcement and Cameron confirmed he was preparing to shoot not only Battle Angel but also another big budgt sci-fi film – Avatar.  It was thought both movies would be shot back-to-back and to make this happen two separate production teams were put to work.  Those plans didn’t eventuate.  Instead Battle Angel was put in limbo whilst Cameron went full steam ahead with Avatar.

Cameron said at the time: “I was going to do Battle Angel first and then Avatar. We spent a fair amount of time looking strategically at which order was the most cost effective, because we’re still doing both, in terms of the technical infrastructure that we had to create. We’re going to be using a lot of the same kind of performance capture systems and things like that on both films. We eventually came down on the side of it making sense for Avatar to go first, so Avatar is going first and then Battle Angel. But they’re really being done back-to-back.”

Back in April Battle Angel received its first IMDB status update in 3 years – from ‘Development Unknown’ to ‘Script’.  I speculated this could mean with Avatar getting close to completion that Battle Angel may be about to ramp up.   Unfortunately, at least for now, that would seem not to be the case.

Whilst attending the James Cameron/Peter Jackson panel at the San Diego Comic-Con an audience member asked James Cameron if he was still interested in making Battle Angel. He replied by basically saying he’s still interested but not right now.

Battle Angel was originally slated for release in 2009.  Presently it is slated for release in 2011.  Unfortunately for all you Battle Angel fans, it looks like 2011 will now also pass you by.

The wait for a live-action Battle Angel feature film continues.

This lengthy wait is probobly driving Battle Angel fans crazy. Just to think, we’ve waited over 5 years already. I don’t want to be an old man like Cameron by the time this film is released.
