James Cameron Talks ‘Battle Angel’ and ‘Avatar 2′

Whilst attending the San Diego Comic-Con MTV managed to score a brief interview with James Cameron.

During the interview Cameron was asked if Battle Angel would be his next film.

“Maybe, maybe,” Cameron replied. “We’re going to look at that.”

Although MTV state in their article that Battle Angel is Cameron’s next feature film, I wouldn’t go jumping for joy just yet if you’re a Battle Angel fan.  Whilst attending the James Cameron/Peter Jackson panel an audience member asked the same question and Cameron basically said that he was still interested in the project, but not just yet.  Read more about the Battle Angel project and watch his reponse to the question here.

Additionally, at the end of the MTV interview Cameron manages to slip in the possibility that Avatar 2 could come before Battle Angel.  Given that the story to Avatar is said to lend itself to a trilogy, it certainly seems likely that if Avatar is a success, Cameron would be keen to finish off the trilogy that he started planning some 14 years ago.

Watch the MTV interview now:

For a more extensive background on Battle Angel go here.

Battle Angel was originally slated for release in 2009.  Presently it is slated for release in 2011. My guess is the 2011 date will also be changed after Cameron sets his sights on Avatar 2.

Avatar will hit theaters on December 18, or December 17 if you live in Australia.

Yes, Avatar does seem suited for a trilogy,… but how many Battle Angel books were there again?!?

Battle Angel deserves to be made into a movie. I don’t think too many people make the connection but Dark Angel always seemed to be based off of the Battle Angel premise. From the “super fighter” character of Jessica Alba (compare her, especially in the black bodysuits to Alita/Gally), to the imagery of cyberpunked Seattle Space needle (compared to renderings of the scrapyard), it was definitely inspired from Yukito Kishiro’s works.

Plus Battle Angel is an awesome story – there’s roughly 23+ graphic novels spanning close to 200+ individual chapters.

Yes, I am super-Kishiro fanboy, and proud to admit it.

If not “Battle Angel” for the title, then I hope they call it “Gun Dream”.

He is problebly gonna call just Alita, Notice all of his films exept for Piranha 2 starts with either A or T.

Cameron -and Hollywood generally -NOW completely underwritten by some of the most awesome genocidal monsters in history—across the Pacific.

—That’s right -and the latest figure is 70,000,000 people
    ‘missing’ in ‘peacetime’.

Anyway, Cameron and the rest of Hollywood are doing their
over-produced best to keep any consciousness from happening
    around these awful statistics.

NOW —back to your circle-jerk fantasies.

OMG! Avatar is light years ahead of anything I have EVER seen before. One unobservant reviewer claimed the effects were of the same calibre as Gollum from the Lord of the Rings trilogy. Like Hel1! I saw the movie in 3D Imax and each muscle twitch, each skin texture and nuance of performance is beyond Gollum’s over-stated peformance. Andy Serkis had to exagerrate because the technology wasn’t as sensitive. But now the deatils beggar belief. I swear I can’t wait to see Avatar 2!!! In the meantime I shall just have to watch this movie again. By the way, what the Hell was ‘nano X’ trying to say? On second thoughts: who cares. XD

Avatar 2 will most likely has a prequel instead of a sequel. It’s definitely coming out unless something happens bad, which is very unlikely.

i only watch movies when the producers, director are well known, like, emmerch, spielberg, michael bay, jerry bruckheimer etch… but james cameron he’s different. he makes every movie satisfying and leaves you an xtra ordinary feeling 100prcnt of wow!!! , he’s the best. as i watched avatar in full 3D the sf the character, the story ,everything was so different it feels that u want a part 2 right now,,, james cameron is epic.

I really enjoyed Avatar and if Cameron would be so kind to make the Avatar 2 come out very soon, then everything would be worthwhile for me and everyone I know that went. I wish that he would really make the right choice and release the second Avatar first. I really cried at the end. Now I am just dreaming about seeing the second and third Avatar.

Wouldn’t it be cool if the “trilogy” was filmed in reverse? With a prequel next, and then a prequel to the 2nd one after that.

  18. Cachorro said:

As soon as i saw Avatar, i said to myself, “jezz we are not alone in this universe”, the movie was so freaking real that i really wanted to jump in that life, and actually i started complaining about a humans life and the crueltly between.
Iono but ive seen it 6times already and i cant wait for avatar 2, i say that james cameron should lose interest on Battle Angel and focus entirely on Avatar 2 and 3 :) , so we get them done asap.

  19. louis said:

there should be a trilogy for avatar the best experiance i have had in the cinema and bringing a sequil should be a must! :)

I recently watched an interview that that had James Cameron talking about all the work it took to get the muscles working correctly on Jake and Neytiri and that any follow up movies would follow the two of them since it won’t require the additional 8-10 months to re-create new characters in so much detail.

This would indicate that it will indeed be a sequel rather than a prequel. I’m curious to see what he has in store for the new story line, With such a large planet and only 1 village explored there are endless possibilities.

-A very open ended plot, I would even say that the planet itself and the way the people interact with it would be a waste if not further explored…

Maybe more people will come to study Pandora and inadvertently damage the planet while trying to make their own artificial version of Pandora in a lab so that our thoughts and memories can be saved too; or maybe try and make humans have that que thing (the part that makes then be able to interact with everything) so they can interact with Pandora -or their artificial version of it?
I dunno, just thinking too much I suppose.. haha

Everywhere in that immersing 3D world looked like a rich fireworks display, wherever you went. it makes you want to be a part of it so much… it really is the best film people will see in a long time, and seriously, definately my favourite. sadly, it will never be the same as to when you see it on the big screen in 3D… but in that room, when everything goes quiet, and the flux that carries you 3 hours later leaves you feeling lost, wanting so much more, like you know everyone else felt the exact same way… It’s really wierd, whenever i hear Jake’s speech, the one that he says before he goes banding together all the tribes.. it makes me feel so strange, like nothing else could have that effect on me.
when i was leaving the cinema, everyone was saying how good the film was, nothing but an endless positive atmosphere- and i swear i felt crackles at my fingertips. I knew that I would continue to be spellbound every time i watch it until every part of the movie is imprinted on my brain.
You can tell that I’ll be following all the news on Avatar 2, and 3. Don’t worry lads, the trilogy’s in good hands and will surely be ground breaking

AVATAR is the best movie for me and i once said that if there wont be an avatar 2 i would kill myself some guy replied that if you are going to kill yourself wait for me :D
But the reason i’m saying this is because avatar fans shouldnt be so selfish there are a lot of battle angel fans waiting for it and it would be a shock to see it’s going to come out later tho i still want avatar first.
Sorry battle angel fans but thats nature :)

I have to agree with Davz, the effects for the aliens in Avatar were almost perfect, skin pores were visible for gods sake. I was totally taken in by Sam Worthingtons performance as his own avatar. It made you forget the Avatar was an interface between his human form and the alien. As far as the audience was concerned Sams Avatar was practically Sam painted blue! I was never reminded I was watching cgi created characters because the quality of the cgi ensured that the performances by the human actors beneath, shone through all of that, and that was the most important thing for them to get right, and they did it right. All it needed for the illusion to collapse was one Jar Jar Binks in there and that would have been it but thankfully we were spared all the cartoon hystrionics!

I just watched AVATAR. it sucked. the story was hokey and totally elementary. i mean come on, a movie that relies totally on visual effects and offers a shotty run of the mill plot and has to have a love story in it to. it was ferngully, dances with wolves, and pocahontis all rolled into one with very noticeable computer animation. i bought the movie for $20 and turned around the same day and sold it for $20. to all of those who say that avatar was and/or is a great movie i say your tastes need reconcidering.

  29. Patrick said:

Cam, I think you are missing a very important point here. You see, everyone knows that Avatar isnt a movie thats great in the same way as something like Mean Streets or Apocalypse Now or any other classic movie you can think of. Its not even as good as all of the classic indie movies out there either. People go to see Avatar with the knowledge that they arent going to see a film like one of those, but for the kind of movie it is, its a great movie. Its a very Entertaing movie!!! I hadnt seen 3D since I saw Jaws 3 in 3d, and that was a totaly different type of experience so to see Avatar presented the way ti was using 3d the way it did was a far better and more memorable experience. Sure; its not even Camerons best movie but it was a very enjoyable movie.

It is a really cool movie and a brilliantly imagined world, but without the whole “it’s James Cameron” “it’s in 3D andhas realistic CG characters” it would just be another cool sci-fi. I loved the movie, but after watching Star Wars again recently, the effects don’t seem all that spectacular any more. If Star Wars was in 3D it would be so much better.

My post may not be proper english,

First time i watched it was on Bluray and let me say this movie DESERVES A PART 2 and 3! I was blown away completely.
The movie was complete in every way, even the LOVE STORY!

We need more of Pandora, James Cameron!!!

    DON’T WASTE TIME!!!

Um…just a question. Is the avatar in “Avatar 2″ going to be like the one in “Avatar 1″? I hope so. They are both handsome and pretty. Anyone with the answer? Please tell me then.

My second Avatar film will explore the deep oceans of Pandora and have a deep moral enviromental message about the gulf oil spill.I will also have Battle Angel Alita make a cameo apearance in Avatar 2 so that both movies can be set in the same continuity.I will also be cutting out ten of the Battle Angel Alita volumes out of my script because they are too emotionally intense for American viewers and I fear the religious right would catch on to what I am doing.

  35. Patrick said:

Hey “James Cameron”, its not good to be goin around imitating people on the internet, “I fear the religious right would catch on to what I am doing”-what are u, some kind of religious nut?
