James Purefoy and Mark Strong Join ‘John Carter of Mars’
James Purefoy (Soloman Kane / Resident Evil) and Mark Strong (Sherlock Holmes / Sunshine) have joined the cast of Disney’s John Carter of Mars.
John Carter of Mars is a new epic sci-fi feature film adapted from the Edgar Rice Burroughs novel that follows a Civil War veteran who, after being transported to Mars, finds himself partially super-powered thanks to the planet’s low gravity. There he becomes embroiled in a battle between the Martians and invading aliens.
Purefoy will play Kantos Kan, the Captain of the Xavarian – the kingdom of Helium’s grand warship.
Strong will play Matai Shang, the ruler of the Thems who has a godlike status.
The two join a growing formidable cast that includes Taylor Kitsch (aka Gambit in X-Men Origins: Wolverine) as the title role of John Carter; Lynn Collins (aka Silverfox in X-Men Origins: Wolverine) as Dejah Thoris, the Princess of Mars; Dominic West (300 / Punisher: War Zone) as the pivotal character of Sab Than, prince of the Zodangans who believes he is entitled to rule Mars; Willem Dafoe (Daybreakers / Spider-Man) as Tars Tarkas, a warmonger; Samantha Morton (Minority Report) as Sola, the daughter of Tars Tarkas who must hide her softer side from her warmongering race; Polly Walker (Patriot Games) as Sarkoja, a merciless, tyrannical Thark; and Thomas Haden Church as Tal Hajus, an ambitious and vicious Thark warrior who is biding his time to be a ruler.
Wall-E writer/director Andrew Stanton is the writer/director behind the project which has been likened to James Cameron’s Avatar in scope.
John Carter of Mars is expected in theaters sometime during 2012.
