A scene from Ink, an indie film receiving rave reviews

If reviews are anything to go by director Jamin Winans’ fantasy thriller Ink is by far the stand out indie film of the year.  Actually, to refer to Ink as a fantasy thriller does the film somewhat of a disservice.  Ink is actually a film that seamlessly blends many genre’s including sci-fi, fantasy, action and suspense but is, at the core of them all, a deeply thoughtful drama about redemption of the spirit. It’s hybrid nature makes Ink a very unique film but one that is finding appeal amongst all kinds of different people.

The movie Ink was the first and the best movie that I have seen so far at the 2009 Santa Barbara International Film Festival (7 films)…I strongly suggest seeing Ink.

Film geeks, there is a new “it” movie – INK…the creative tour-de-force behind INK is Jamin Winans – he wrote, directed, produced, and edited the film, and did the music. I hope from this review it is apparent that the direction of this movie is spectacular, and the creativity involved in writing it is equally as impressive. The music is also phenomenal — it does the perfect job of setting the tone, from ominous notes of dread to propulsive battle techno. Another of his “holy shit” talents is editing. Winans should get an Academy Award for it…at any rate, INK is a lock to achieve cult phenomenon status, and launch the career of Jamin Winans into the statosphere. If you want to see something you’ve never seen before, INK is a must-see film.

If you haven’t heard about Ink, you soon will..The film is beautiful and very fast moving. The action is done is a version of quick cuts that is sharp and fast. The story is a slow developing puzzle. I’m seeing Ink for my THIRD time tonight and may see it again. This is a mainstream indie film that you will remember.

Audience reactions and reviews out of Santa Barbara were so positive that the filmmaker decided to come home to Denver and immediately open the film for a theatrical run at the Starz FilmCenter. The opening weekend was met with sell out shows and extraordinary enthusiasm from an extremely diverse audience.

If there is one independent feature film you decide to see this year, Ink would have to be it.
