Jay Chou will follow in Bruce Lee’s footsteps after being cast as martial arts expert Kato in the upcoming The Green Hornet.

Chou scored the role after Stephen Chow walked away from the part last month.  He joins Seth Rogen (who plays crimefighter Britt Reid) in the Columbia Pictures’ film.

Director Michel Gondry said: “Jay is incredibly unique and charming and fights like a wild dog! When I filmed him next to Seth, they had such great chemistry.”

Chou became a well known Asian pop star after appearing on a TV talent contest.  His first acting role was a comedy-action hit in China titled Initial D. He also starred in The Curse of the Golden Flower and Kung Fu Dunk, and will soon be seen in Yuen Woo-Ping’s True Legend.

The film, based upon the original The Green Hornet radio series, has been scripted by Seth Rogen & Evan Goldberg.

“It’s an overwhelming experience to take on a role made famous by Bruce Lee,” Chou said. “I won’t try to be Bruce Lee’s Kato — I will try to bring my own interpretation to the part.”

And just in case you missed Seth Rogen’s unveiling of the awesome Black Beauty car from the film at last month’s San Diego Comic-Con:
