‘Lobo’ Feature Film Confirmed, But You Won’t Be Happy

Back in May the rumor surfaced that Warner Bros. were looking to develop a feature film based on the mega-violent DC Comics character Lobo.

Warner Bros. have now confirmed director Guy Ritchie will direct the film following completion of Sherlock Holmes.

Unfortunately there’s a catch, and it’s not a good one.  In fact, it’s about the worst one any fan of Lobo would want to hear: Warner Bros. are aiming for a PG-13 rating.

If you don’t know anything about Lobo, here’s a quick rundown.  Lobo is an alien bounty hunter who is the last of his race.  He’s a guy who killed all of his own kind because he, well, enjoyed killing them…and usually in the most gory way possible.  Lobo is basically as tough as Superman (and in fact fought Superman), loves weapons, women, alcohol, and killing people.   He also has a pet Bulldog that’s really just as bad as he is.

The Lobo comic is arguably one of the most violent – if not the most violent – DC comic.  It’s hilarious it’s so violent.  There is simply no way anything less than an R-rating could do Lobo justice.

Which means a PG-13 simply won’t work.

Now that I’ve shared that, here are the raw movie details.

Joel Silver, Akiva Goldsman and Andrew Rona will produce.  Steve Richards and Kerry Foster will be executive producers.

The script comes from Don Payne.  Apparently in the script Lobo is a seven-foot tall, blue-skinned, indestructible and heavily muscled anti-hero who drives a pimped out motorcycle, and lands on Earth in search of four fugitives who are bent on wreaking havoc.   Upon arriving on Earth, Lobo teams with a small town teenaged girl to stop the creatures.

Lobo will be full of visual effects and apparently the film will have a similar tone to director Guy Ritchie’s past films Snatch and Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels.

A release date hasn’t been announced.

Final thought: With a PG-13 rating only one thing could remotely get me to check out a Lobo feature film, and that’s if Jason Momoa (aka Ronon Dex in Stargate Atlantis) is cast in the role.  And that’s a big “remotely”.
