Warner Bros. and Silver Pictures have hired Evan Daugherty to write the latest draft of the screenplay to their Masters of the Universe feature film, Grayskull.

Daugherty scored the Grayskull gig with only a single unproduced screenplay to his name (Shrapnel).  His fortunes began after a management firm noticed his talent via a script writing competition he had entered (Script Pimp).  The previous draft of Grayskull was penned by Justin Marks who Daugherty now replaces.

Warner Bros. want their new take on Masters of the Universe to be a gritty fantasy where the original story will be re-imagined (hence a different title).  In Grayskull the lead character is a soldier named Adam who sets off to find his destiny and happens upon the magical world of Eternia.  There, Skeletor has raised a technological army that is bent on eradicating magic.

John Stevenson will direct the new film.  Stevenson directed Kung fu Panda and is also attached to direct We3 (about a group of laboratory test animals who have been turned into combat-ready weapons that break free of their captors and embark on a journey home.)

Masters of the Universe is a popular Mattel franchise created 28 years ago that includes toys, comics, animated series and action figures.  It’s popularity led to the big screen in 1987 with Dolph Lundgren starring as He-Man and Frank Langella as Skeletor.  The live action movie performed relatively poorly, barely earning enough to cover its budget.

Grayskull will be released sometime in 2011.

I can’t wait for this…the only part I’m not sure about is this soldier crap. I think the story is good enough without much reimagining, but f***, I’m just glad it’s gettin made.

I have high hopes for this one, especially since reading that script review about a year ago. I believe evan daugherty will be working off that script which has no mention of Adam of Randor being a soldier. He’s a prince who must realize his destiny to save eternia from the evil lord skeletor. He’s more of a warrior than soldier. Gonna be a lot of fanboys at the midnight showing of this armed with inflatable power swords!

Well, there goes Hollywood f@cking up another great story , again! That must be the new standards of Hollywood film making: How to f@ck up a great story, twice! Story was already written 28 yrs ago, just pick up some comic books.

Hopefully this film will have more special effects. I was very dissapointed in the way the Sorceress was made in the last one. They should have made her appearance more attractive and had someone younger play her like in the cartoon. They didn’t even show her turning into a bird or anything, nor Adam becoming He-Man. Looking forward to seeing what they come up with…….

I am so sick of hollywood taking a source material that people get completly exited to see made into a movie and time and time again being let down because some dusche screen writer director and producer change the story so much other than caractor names the movies never even resemble the original show they are from and even if the movie is good ( hardly ever) you are so let down by the changes that becomes what you focus on and you are let down please quit reimagining and make movies true to the source that is what people want and never seem to get. HOLLYWOOD quit crapping on our childhood heros and dreams and not just with this movie but all old and original sources you keep destroying!!!!!

Who will they get to play him tho, there is no one i can think of who has the physique to take that part on…I love the original but probably because Dolph Lungren looked so beautiful in that outfit he was almost wearing.

I guess they will water it down so it’s unrecognisable like they have done with so many other classics, I get so i don’t go and see remakes anymore as i am always dissappointed
