Matt Smith’s ‘Doctor Who’ Dalek Story Update
Back in June we learned that one of Matt Smith’s first outings as the Timelord in Doctor Who would see him come face to face with the Doctor’s old nemesis, the Daleks.
The latest news indicates the Dalek story may air as either Smith’s second or third episode and will be penned by Mark Gatiss. Gatiss previously penned the Doctor Who episodes ‘The Lazarus Experiment’, ‘The Unquiet Dead’, and ‘The Idiot’s Lantern’.
A spoilerific synopsis has also been reported by Digital Spy which, I’m sorry to say, sounds completely lame:
The Doctor and companion Amy Pond arrive in London in World War II. The pair then come face to face with Prime Minister Winston Churchill and discover that he is using an army of Daleks in the fight against the Nazis. The metal monsters have apparently been painted with green battle colours and equipped with Union Jack flags on their helmets.
I really hope this story-line is a rumor because it sounds utterly stupid.
Matt Smith’s first season as the Doctor begins in the second quarter of 2010.

My goodness give Matt and the writers a chance!!! Don’t write him off without even seeing it yet. I kinda like the idea because you know the Daleks are going to take over and the Doctor will save the day and kick their behinds. Whether it has a Union Jack on it or not. I do think a better plot would be the Nazis would have used the Daleks. That would explain why they rolled over Europe. Just think what “Blink” might have sounded like but now that we see the finished product??

I’ll always give it a chance, but there was universal exclamation at this end from everyone that the idea sounded completely ridiculous. However, I’m certainly not writing Matt Smith off. From what I’ve seen of him he’s going to be an excellent Doctor. The guy can act, he’s seriously good and I think those who think he’s too young are in for a pleasant surprise when they finally see him do his thing.

Umm.. yea.. it sounds..okish depends how they spin it i guess, but it does sound a bit stupid, although you never know with doctor who. but personally i hope its a rumor.

People who knock this Dalek story no doubt have limited imagination. The Daleks are notorious for cooking up little schemes to infiltrate human society as a early stage of a bigger plan. Usually these schemes end up having some sort of strategic value to the Daleks’ ultimate goal of universal domination. I’m curious to see what they’re up to this time
Just like they were “up to something” in “Daleks In Manhattan/Evolution of the Daleks”

You know what I think lacks imagination? Saying “Daleks are notorious for doing the same thing over and over again…I’m curious to see how they will do the same thing over and over again this time…”
If thinking union jacks painted on dalek heads is a stupid idea means you must therefore lack imagination, then so be it, because its a RIDICULOUS idea.

In a Rube Goldberg and Wile E. Coyote sort of way.
Let’s throw Dr. Evil and Austin Powers’ with the time travelling Beetle in for good measure.

The same thing over and over? How much of the WHOLE series have you watched? How many previous stories have the Daleks tried this angle? And it hasn’t even been yet confirmed that they WILL have the UJs painted on them. The element of universal domination being “the same thing over and over” with Dalek stories is ofcourse a must, since their very existence is to perpetuate their species and eliminate all who they believe to be inferior. If the Daleks AREN’T there because of some strategic plan, THEN TELL ME WHY THEY ARE THERE AT ALL! Something tells me they aren’t going to just drop in on the Professor just to have a cup of tea and a really good natter.
But since universal domination seems to be getting a bit old for you, perhaps you would care to venture an opinion on what the Daleks should do, now that they’ve set aside their ways of conquests and extermination, and their very purpose has been tossed out the window….

Wow Ethan, that’s a lot of PASSION you got there. I hope you’re a fan of Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles too
For the record, I’m thinking JD wasn’t saying the Dalek’s desire to conquest all is unimaginative. Wasn’t he referring to the statement: “cooking up little schemes to infiltrate human society as a early stage of a bigger plan”?
If so, then I agree with him. You ask why they are there at all, and I ask the same question. Why are they? Humans don’t even have spaceships – why the need to infiltrate at all, ever? If they really want to EXTERMINATE, they could just do it from orbit surely…
On the Union Jacks thing, come on, is anyone really defending that? I’m guessing its a joke. It’s not an official announcement is it, so it quite possibly IS a joke. So anyone defending it is either defending a really ridiculous aspect to a Dalek story, or a joke. Either way, BLI has it on the money – its Austin Powers central.

Seriously, enough already with the Daleks. They are fun. They are creepy. They are relatively cheap because all the props and costumes have already been built. But they have also been in what, nine or ten episodes of the new series?
That is overkill. The Daleks have overstayed their welcome. All the new and convoluted ways to bring back the Daleks again and again and again just further cheapens every sacrifice the Doctor has made to save them.
Think about it. Just in the new series alone, he has lost three companions to the Daleks,( Jack, Rose, Donna) and his entire planet.
And yet, like a evil cosmic rubber duckie, they keep bobbing back up again no matter how many times they get beaten down.
I’m not saying retired them for good, but lets have at least one, preferably two seasons go by before the Daleks come back again. The Cybermen, too.

Not the bloody boring Daleks again.

If Gallifrey does make it back then i would assume that the daleks are also back. which would mean that they would pop up through the series but they would be more evil as would be pure daleks so at least that would make it more interesting. Also listening to the audio on you tube the ‘prof’ the doctor is talking to sounds very like a mr copper from journey of the damned and says the idea came to him in a dream.
Give the new man a chance as when dt was announced i was unsure but now he has become my favourite or at least joint favourite along with peter davidson!!!!

This conversation reminds me of the Dalek song…
Dalek, Dalek, Bloody lot of Daleks, Dalek, Dalek, Truck.

daleks are the greatest alien ever doctor who wouldn’t be here today

I got to see this one on BBC America finally just last night (Taped on DVR) and…
Uhm, disappointing. For one thing, I agree it would have made a lot more sense to have the Germans utilizing the Daleks in the war (After all, so much of the Dalek imagery and philosophy is Nazi-based; “Genesis of the Daleks”, anyone?) but more importantly, they are becoming overused.
Let me say that I ADORE most dalek stories. When the lone Dalek showed up early on in Chris Eccleston’s run, I cheered. My favorite baddies were back. When an army of them came back despite the time war, I was ecstatic. but lately… They’re like cockroaches!
Seems they pop up a lot more frequently than they did in the original series.
and… am I the only one who thinks the new multi-color daleks are just plain ugly? They remind me of mini coopers somehow… bright colored, and somehow really squat and fat.
