McG Calls Out Michael Bay

Two of this years biggest movies involve giant robots: Terminator Salvation from Director McG and Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen from Director Michael Bay.  Perhaps it was always going to be the case such a situation would result in a rivalry beyond the box office.

You see, earlier in the year Michael Bay took a swipe at McG over, wait for it, his giant robot.  It began when Bay saw the giant Harvester Terminator in the first Terminator Salvation preview.  Immediately Bay posted a message on MichaelBay.com:

“We’ve seen certain movies coming out even try to duplicate Transformer size robots in their ads. Please, come on.”

McG retaliated, ”It bothers me to tell you the truth. Ultimately, our large robots have nothing to do with the Transformers robots. I say with respect, giant robots have been the theme of film for a real long time.”

Bay later quipped that he’d love to see his Transformers take on Terminators (apart from at the box office).  Thing’s went silent for a little while, at which point we thought the rivalry was done (save for the zillions of Transformers fans vs Terminator fans that immediately went crazy on message boards).

Then McG publicly stated his view that Terminator’s are more realistic than Transformers, announcing:  “I think Transformers is a terrific picture, but that’s a picture whose genesis is in a toy. They’re sort of more colourful and optimistic and the pictures are sort of breakdancing and flips and backspins. But ours is a very different, real world. Ours is a world of, ‘This is where we can be ten years from now.’”

As of today, the rivalry continues.  In an interview with Men Style.com, McG has shown that he’s not backing down – in no uncertain (and very laughable) terms.

“Michael Bay has a big c**k,” he said.  [Lol]  “But I’d like to believe mine is bigger.  If he’s up for it, we can both reveal ourselves on the Spartacus steps at Universal and put the question to rest.”

We can’t help but wonder where this latest comment is coming from.  Since it’s definitely turning up the heat, could it be that the rivalry has continued behind the scenes without us being aware? Or is it simply that McG hasn’t gotten over Bay’s initial rant? Whichever is the case, we’re quietly confident this isn’t the last we’re going to hear of the banter between the two – we’re expecting a new comment from Bay to pop up in his forum any time now.

Who knows, perhaps Bay will deflate the whole scenario by admitting that Transformers is a children’s movie and that McG has a fair point (if in fact arguing about fictional robots is ever reasonable).  It’s impossible to debate that Bay’s Transformers aren’t the origin of giant robots and neither is McG wrong when he refers to Transformers as a children’s franchise based on toys.  Perhaps Bay will stand tall, admit his movies aren’t as serious as the Terminator movies (nor meant to be) and are just for fun.  Rivalry over.  Or perhaps, in the next few months, there’ll be some very interesting snapshots to be captured on the Spartacus steps at Universal.  Either way, we’re happy.

Terminator Salvation and Transformers: Revenge Of The Fallen will both be released mid year, but Terminator Salvation will get the jump on its toy-based rival.  Salvation will be released in the US on May 21, whilst we’ll have to wait until June 24 to see Revenge of the Fallen.
