There’s an interesting report over at Cinematical.  Apparently in conversation after Wondercon Terminator Salvation director, McG, discussed the possibility of Robert Patrick appearing in the next Terminator film (not Terminator Salvation, the one after that).

Robert Patrick arguably played the best Terminator in the business, the T1000, as seen in Terminator 2: Judgment Day.  Half the reason Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines didn’t do so well was the fact that Patrick’s Terminator was a tough shoe to fill.  Well, there were other reasons for sure, but that was certainly a biggy.

But the story goes that Robert Patrick wouldn’t be reprising his role as the liquid metal monster, but rather as the aged human scientist that creates him – after all, Robert Patrick is 50 years old now.  From Cinematical:

McG says, “I talk to Robert Patrick with great regularity. It’s interesting – I was [thinking of] a through line. I’ll bounce it off of you guys: I like the idea in a prospective next picture that you meet Robert Patrick the way he looks today, and he’s a scientist that’s working on improving cell replication so we can stay healthier and we can cure juvenile diabetes and all these things that once again sound like good ideas — and once again live as an idealized expression of ourselves. So imagine seeing a sixty-year-old Robert Patrick and knowing, ‘Holy shit! That’s gonna be the T-1000 – who comes back perfect, lean and the whole thing.’ I haven’t concluded that, but Robert and I had dinner the other night and talked about it. I made two movies with Robert Patrick, so I like him very much. And now he’s very heavily into motorcycle riding. He’s a really serious guy.”

Of course, that doesn’t count out the potential use of expert CGI. We’re already aware Schwarzenegger may appear as many T800’s in the new film, thanks to the use of modern technology that is capable of superimposing his face over younger actors bodies. Why not the same for Patrick?

It all sounds promising, but in the end production of a sequel depends on how successful Terminator Salvation turns out to be come box office day, though I’m fairly sure that’s a given…
