MUST WATCH: ‘Spartacus: Blood and Sand’ Trailer
A trailer has been unveiled at the San Diego Comic-Con for the new Starz cable television series Spartacus: Blood and Sand and it has blown me away.
Spartacus: Blood and Sand comes from Legend of the Seeker producers Sam Raimi and Rob Tabert. When it was first announced it was said the series would be “rich in character, action, sex and combat” and that it would be Gladiator for TV using Zack Snyder 300 style virtual environments. Judging by the trailer they’ve pulled it off.
In Spartacus: Blood and Sand Australian Andy Whitfield (Gabriel / McLeods Daughters) plays the lead role as Spartacus, a soldier in the Roman Auxiliary who is taken prisoner and sentenced to fight as a Gladiator for defying a Roman Legate. After multiple wins as a Gladiator, Spartacus is sold into slavery where he must fight for survival, befriend his enemies and play politics in a world of corruption, violence, sex and fame. In the trailer Whitfield looks exceptional in the role.
Watch the trailer now:
Additional cast include Lucy Lawless (Xena: Warrior Princess / Battlestar Galactica) as Lucretia who, with her husband Batiatus, own the slave Spartacus. Batiatus, who is the owner of the Gladiator school, is played by John Hannah (The Mummy / The Mummy Returns). Erin Cummings (Dollhouse) plays plays Spartacus’ wife Sura. Peter Mensah (300, Avatar) is Doctore, Batiatus’ most loyal and trusted slave. Manu Bennett (30 Days of Night, The Condemned) is Crixus – the top Gladiator. Antonio Te Maioha (Xena: Warrior Princess, Legend of the Seeker) will play Barca, Batiatus’ bodyguard and hit man. Craig Parker (aka Darken Rahl in Legend of the Seeker) plays Glaber who blames Spartacus for his failed military campaign. Nick E. Tarabay (Crash, The Sopranos) will play Ashur, a former gladiator who is now the Gladiator bookie.
The first series will consist of thirteen one hour episodes.
Spartacus: Blood and Sand will be supported by a new motion comic inspired by the series titled Spartacus: Upon The Sands Of Vengeance – which also looks fantastic. The comic, to be published by Devil’s Due Publishing, is written by Executive Producer Stephen S. DeKnight (Smallville / Angel / Dollhouse) with art by Adam Archer and will be released a month before the live-action series.
Watch a trailer for the motion comic now:
“This is a very exciting project for Devil’s Due,” DDP President Josh Blaylock said. “Not only do we get to tell an incredible story full of intense action, battles, and sexy characters, we also get to work with a project from Tapert and Raimi and the entire awesome team. We couldn’t be happier.”
“We have an expansive vision for the retelling of the classic Spartacus story, filled with astounding visuals and larger than life characters. A comic book is the natural extension to the world we’re constructing,” DeKnight said.
And what did he have to say about the live-action series?
“This will have a death toll like nothing you’ve seen on television before.”
Alongside the unveiling of the trailer, limited edition copies of the first issue of Spartacus: Upon The Sands of Vengeance also made their debut at the San Diego Comic-Con (complete with Comic-Con specific covers).
