New ‘Gamer’ TV Spot – Last Time

Gerard Butler is Kable in 'Gamer'

A new TV Spot for Gamer has been released and, to be honest, it doesn’t make any sense.

In Gamer, Gerard Butler stars as death row inmate Kable , a man who has become the champion of an online mind-control based game called ‘Slayers’.

The TV Spot uses the tag line “the last time Gerard Butler kicked this much ass was 300 years ago.”  Are the marketers referring to Zack Snyder’s 300 (which starred Gerard Butler) but which was based upon an event that took place around 480BC, or is there a Gerard Butler action flick that takes place in the 18th century that nobody knows about?

Anyway, scratch your head after the jump.

Gamer hits theaters on September 4, 2009.

Think he says: “The last time Gerard Butler kicked this much ass was 300, years ago”.

You left out the comma, giving it a whole different meaning.

Perhaps, but I’d argue the use of poor English in the ad gave it a whole different meaning to me, as opposed to me giving one to it.

It could have been “The last time Gerard Butler kicked this much ass was years ago in 300” or

“The last time Gerard Butler kicked this much ass was in 300, years ago.”

Actually even that is bad English lol. Oh well. The footage is cool at least :D

Sounds like 300 years ago to me…

If the voice over was meant to be understood as; “..was 300, years ago.” Thats the first time I’ve heard a narrator date an actor. I’m sure it was just a mistake… the writer of the ad made a mistake…of what the movie 300 was about. I hate listening to that ad.

I heard this ad for the first time this past weekend, and ever since, all I’ve been able to hear it as is “was 300 years ago.”

I have to think if they meant “was 300, years ago” they could have just said “was 300, centuries ago” (or even “millennia ago” although that would probably lose the target audience).

This is just poor copy writing and no one picking up on the error.
