Lionsgate’s Daybreakers is a new sci-fi horror film that takes place in the year 2017 after a plague has transformed nearly all humans into vampires – but there’s a twist.  All the vampires have accepted their condition and have returned to their normal, everyday lives.   Well sort of – first they have an issue to deal with.

Up and coming Australian actress Isabel Lucas (Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen / Steven Spielberg’s The Pacific) stars as Alison Bromley – one of the last humans left alive in the world.  Therein lies the issue faced by the vampires – their dwindling food supply!

24 year old Lucas stars in Daybreakers alongside two-time Oscar nominee Ethan Hawke, as well as veteran’s Willem Dafoe and Sam Neill (who plays her father in the film).

The film is centered on Hawke’s character Edward, a vampire researcher who works with a covert band of vampires seeking a blood substitute before time runs out to save the human race from extinction.  Edward wants to become human again, whilst his brother (Willem Dafoe) wants to embrace vampirism and would prefer to capture and farm the last humans.

Additional cast members include Jay Laga’aia (Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith / Episode II: Attack of the Clones / Legend of the Seeker) and Australian acress Claudia Karvan (Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith / Farscape / The Secret Life of Us).

Daybreakers is directed by The Spierig Brothers’ (Michael and Peter Spierig) who previously collaborated on the zombie/horror/comedy Undead.  Chris Brown (The Proposition) is producing in conjunction with Sean and Bryan Furst (The Matador and The Cooler).

Visual Effects in Daybreakers have been provided by Weta, who are also involved in the production of James Cameron’s Avatar.

** Spoiler Alert **

When discussing her audition for the Daybreaker’s role, Lucas gave away a spoiler regarding what lies in store for Sam Neill’s character.

“My first audition was the worst I have ever done, ever,” she said.  “It was quite an extreme scene of going from crying to brutally stabbing her father.”

Given that she is apparently one of the last humans left alive (some news sites report that she is in fact the final human), and given that Neill plays her father in the film, it sounds like Sam Neill might be facing a wooden stake to the heart.
