Panosonic to Screen ‘Avatar’ on 3D TV’s in Touring Trailer-Vans

Director James Cameron has signed on with Panasonic to promote new 3D TV’s.

As part of the deal, next month Panasonic plans to drive several trailer-vans around the US and Europe screening Avatar on large-screen 3D TV’s.

The deal was announced on Friday as part of Cameron’s and Twentieth Century Fox’s push to use Avatar to break new ground in 3D viewing experiences.  Avatar will be the biggest major Hollywood film to debut worldwide in both 2D and 3D.

Panasonic is planning to start selling 3D TV’s next year. Sony and Samsung also have prototype 3D TV’s under development.

“I believe 3D is how we will experience movies, gaming and computing in the near future. 3D is not something you watch. It’s a reality you feel you could step into,” Cameron said.

“We want to get global interest rolling,” Panasonic General Manager Masayuki Kozuka said. “For people to want to watch 3D at home, [Avatar] has to be a blockbuster.”

The announcement hints that the 3D trailer-van screens will be showing the whole movie, but I doubt that.  It remains unclear at this time what specific footage the trailer-vans will be shown.

Avatar hits theaters:
Australia – December 17, 2009
USA & UK – December 18, 2009
