Rob Zombie to Reinvent ‘The Blob’
Rob Zombie (Halloween / The Devil’s Rejects) will write, direct and produce another remake of The Blob.
The original 1958 film starred Steve McQueen and followed an alien that consumes everything in its path as it grows bigger and bigger. A remake was made in 1988 by The Scorpion King director Chuck Russell but performed badly at the box office earning back less than half of its $19M budget.
Zombie was apparently a fan of the original but doesn’t intend on re-creating the 50’s style alien.
“My intention is not to have a big red blobby thing — that’s the first thing I want to change,” Zombie said. “That gigantic Jello-looking thing might have been scary to audiences in the 1950s, but people would laugh now.”
Zombie acknowledges that whilst The Blob will be scary, it is more science fiction than horror.
“I’d been looking to break out of the horror genre, and this really is a science fiction movie about a thing from outer space,” Zombie said. “I intend to make it scary, and the great thing is I have the freedom once again to take it in any crazy direction I want to.”
Whilst there are a number of producers on board, one pretty cool aspect of the new film is that original Blob producer Jack H. Harris is on board.
The new Blob will be R-rated and carry a budget of around $30M.
Production will begin next spring.
