Ross to Write ‘Venom’, But it Will Have to Wait
Six months ago Zombieland writers Paul Wernick and Rhett Reese handed a first draft Venom screenplay to Sony. A few weeks ago Sony were apparently moving ahead on the film based on a completed second draft by the pair. Things were looking good.
Then, less than one week later all the good news fell by the wayside when the announcement came that Sony had hired Spider-Man 4 scribe Gary Ross to completely rewrite the script and, potentially, direct the film. This meant more delays.
Now we’re hearing that Ross has other film commitments that are going to take priority, which will force even more delays.
The Playlist are reporting (via Cinematical) that Ross won’t be able to start work on Venom until he finishes directing his next film, Matt Helm. The news apparently comes from an insider that says as a result, there’s no way Venom can start shooting until at least 2011.
It’s not official of course, but it does shed an element of doubt on whether or not the proposed 2012 release for Venom is still on the cards.
The Venom saga continues.
