A week ago it was reported that Hugo Weaving (Elrond), Ian McKellen (Gandalf) and Andy Serkis (Gollum) were all set to return “as the roles they originated in the [Lord of the Rings] trilogy.”

This news may yet turn out to be accurate in the future but as of this moment it is pure speculation.

Hugo Weaving had this to say to Moviehole:

I haven’t actually talked to anyone about it. Doesn’t mean I won’t be doing it, [I’m] just not onboard yet.

What of the other returning actors?  Simply put, there have been no official announcements.

The Hobbit part one will be released in December 2011.

The Hobbit part two will follow in December 2012.
