Rumor: ‘Terminator 5′ To Be Set In London, If It Gets Made At All

Terminator Salvation

Terminator 5 may be set in London in the year 2011 after John Connor travels back in time, an “industry source” apparently told Bleeding Cool.

This rumor could have substance, given that back in May director McG told FilmJournal that he suspected Terminator 5 would take place in a pre-judgment day 2011.

From FilmJournal:

“I strongly suspect the next movie is going to take place in a [pre-Judgment Day] 2011,” McG reveals. “John Connor is going to travel back in time and he’s going to have to galvanize the militaries of the world for an impending Skynet invasion. They’ve figured out time travel to the degree where they can send more than one naked entity. So you’re going to have hunter killers and transports and harvesters and everything arriving in our time and Connor fighting back with conventional military warfare, which I think is going to be fucking awesome. I also think he’s going to meet a scientist that’s going to look a lot like present-day Robert Patrick [who famously played the T-1000 in Terminator 2], talking about stem-cell research and how we can all live as idealized, younger versions of ourselves.”

Whether or not the London setting is accurate or not, the real question is not when or where Terminator 5 might occur, but rather if it will.

Terminator Salvation’s budget is estimated to be a whopping $200M, whilst its box office revenue hasn’t come close to that figure.  It has dragged in a mere $125M worldwide and witnessed a significant decline week to week in viewer numbers. On Friday it pulled in an estimated $2.5M, some 50% less than the previous Friday, indicating the likelihood of it surpassing its budget in its theatrical run is shrinking.

If Terminator 5 was dependent on the success of Terminator Salvation, it might be fair to say Terminator 5 is unlikely.

It’s a strange scenario really. If you follow public opinion on Twitter, half the people who see Salvation hate it, the other half absolutely love it, and a few are in between. Clearly the monumental gap between these mixed reviews has impacted the box office, yet despite this the IMDB has Terminator Salvation sitting at number one on its popularity based ‘Moviemeter’ – yes, even above Paramount’s Star Trek.

Unfortunately dollars and not popularity alone will bring the green-light to Terminator 5, whether it is planned to take place in London or not.

Ok, so every movie update and preview talks about John Conner going back to a pre-judgment day 2011 to unite the world’s military against an oncoming Skynet invasion. Now don’t get me wrong, it does sound interesting and I am going to go see it in the theaters when it comes out, but how can 2011 be pre-judgment when judgment day occurred in 2004? Also if they are only going to have six movies, then the last one has to be about 5 hours or so in order for John to form his relationship with Kyle, take control of the Resistance, send back the terminators to the right time, and to defeat Skynet. Now that’s just with John, Kyle needs to fall in love with Sarah, time-travel needs to be invented and completed, the Resistance needs to get a hold of that technology, and that’s to say the least considering you need to keep the time correct. By this I mean that John needs to send the terminators back when he first gets a hold of the technology because he originally sends back a T-800. Now if the T-1000 were in John’s future time when he sent them back, then he would have obviously sent the best he could. This in mind, we would need a good amount of time for all of this to happen because Skynet would later send their improved models to stop the older ones. So unless they are going to have a movie that spans over a 10-20 year period, then we need more than six movies or the fifth one needs to be along these lines with the apocalyptic theme. We also can’t forget to include John Conner’s death as mentioned in T3. The terminator in T3 was sent back by John’s wife when he died. He will be killed by a Terminator because as they have already shown, you can’t change the future. Judgment Day still happened despite their numerous efforts to stop and control it. If anything, McG has already screwed up the timeline with Terminator: Salvation with the newer Terminators in that time. Now unless he will say that John already sent back the other Terminators, or if he for some reason decides to send older models back, then the storyline is weak. That also means that if he sends the older versions back in his time then….well it just wouldn’t make since since their technology to capture the Terminators as shown in T4 can capture more advanced Terminators. Why would he send back older versions? Perhaps McG can claim that the older versions were able to be reprogrammed and the newer ones couldn’t be because Skynet somehow prevented it. Whichever way they choose, McG has the story laid out in front of him; he just needs to piece it together properly.

Why was there a Marcus Wright. To give john a second chance since the terminator thought he killed him. time travel is a joke. Leave it alone fight in the future.

Why don’t you give the T-1000 to Robert Pattinson or Wentworth Miller? Time travel could lead to many paradox. Forget about it. FIGHT IN THE FUTURE !
