‘Smallville’ Season 9 Won’t be so Dark After All
Whilst attending the San Diego Comic-Con Smallville Executive Producer Brian Peterson said the ninth season of Smallville would be “Clark’s darkest hour.”
Apparently the comment led to fan backlash with many complaining about the prospect of Superman going dark. In response, Peterson has come out and down-played the comments.
“We might’ve misled people a little bit with that,” he tells EW. “Clark has some very dark decisions to make and he starts the season in a very dark place, but the season itself won’t be dark. In fact, Clark and Lois will be back in each other’s orbits and there will be a lot of the fun that we had last year—even more than we had last year.”
Peterson then offers an example, serving up a minor spoiler from the upcoming season.
“[Lois and Clark will be] in the trenches fighting zombies,” he reveals. “And when they catch their breath from fighting zombies, [romantic] sparks will fly.”
Personally it’s a shame to hear this. I was hoping for the series to change it up a little and go a little darker in Clark’s final days before he blossom’s into Superman.
I thought the concept of a darkened period of life being the catalyst that transitions him into Superman would have been perfect – and would have shown he truly is the Man of Steel in more ways than one.
After watching the series since the beginning I felt it was fair that the “fun” had had its day, at least for the moment. After all, for Clark life is about to get very serious as his powers begin to exert themselves and, in turn, he takes on even more responsibility – and the loneliness that accompanies it.
It seems not all fans agree.
The first episode of Smallville’s season 9, titled ‘Savior’, will air on the CW Network September 25,2009.
