Shocktilyoudrop have posted an excellent interview with brothers Peter and Michael Spierig, the duo-directing team behind the upcoming sci-fi vampire film, Daybreakers.

Daybreakers takes place in 2019 and tells the story of a world dominated by vampires who, with humans on the verge of extinction, are faced with the dire threat of their food supply running out.  The story follows a vampire researcher named Edward (Ethan Hawke) who is racing against the clock to find a blood substitute before time runs out.

During the interview the brothers confirm that they had no idea about the first Twilight film when they began working on Daybreakers. They explain that the film contains social commentary but not so much that it will get in your face and detract from the entertainment value, and also comment on their reasons for selecting a retrofuturistic look for the vampires dress, amongst other things.

Perhaps most comforting is the fact that they also confirm Legendary Pictures have been great in giving them complete flexibility to deliver an R-rated film with extreme violence.

Additional Daybreakers cast include Willem Dafoe (Spider-Man 3 / Anamorph / Antichrist); up and coming Australian actress Isabel Lucas (Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen) as Alison Bromley, one of the last surviving humans; Jay Laga’aia (Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith / Episode II: Attack of the Clones / Legend of the Seeker) as Senator Turner; Australian actress Claudia Karvan (Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith / Farscape / The Secret Life of Us) as Audrey Bennett; and fellow Australian actor Sam Neill as Alison’s father Charles Bromley.
