Stargate Universe: New Stargate Series coming in 2009
Hot on the heels of the news that Stargate Atlantis would wrap up at the end of season 5, Stargate fans have been treated to some great news. As of 2009, a new Stargate series will hit television screens, titled Stargate Universe. The new series will premiere as a 2 hour movie in early 2009 and will introduce a team of explorers who discover an ancient and abandoned ship called Destiny. Destiny will be on a pre-programmed mission to the far reaches of the Universe, leaving the team unable to return to Earth.
According to reports, the show will include a lot of space based action, and be less land based than either of the previous two Stargate series. In what might be great news, series producers have stated they don’t intend to just remake the first two Stargate series, but intend to reinvigorate the new series completely.
Series co-creators Wright and Cooper state: “This is an opportunity to reinvent this franchise and make it relevant to a new generation,” Howe said. “We really don’t want to be more of the same. It’s going to build clearly off the existing franchise but with a cast that gives it a younger vibe. In Universe, we plan to keep those elements that have made the franchise a success, such as adventure and humor, while breaking new ground in the relationships between mostly young and desperate explorers, thrust together and far from home. Above all, we believe the Stargate itself remains an enduring icon with infinite potential as a jumping-off point for telling stories.”
After the disapointment of learning Atlantis would end at the end of its current season, this news is very much welcomed. Now we can look forward to Stargate SG1 movies, Stargate Atlantis movies, and Stargate Universe television episodes. All in all, 2009 is looking like a good year for Stargate.
