‘Terminator Salvation’ Ending Will Be One For Debate

McG has told MTV that the ending of Terminator Salvation is not a happy ending and it will leave audiences divided.
“The ending is indeed elliptical,” McG said. ‘And it challenges the audience. It’s not a happy little bow of an ending at all. The ending is tough and requires reflection, and in some degrees it bifurcates the audience. You walk back to the car and one person thinks it means this, and the other person thinks it means that.”
The film’s ending will be left open and geared towards a story arc that is expected to unfold over a further two Terminator flicks.
“If we have good fortune we have indeed planned out two more Terminator pictures.”
Of course, for fans to enjoy the entire story arc will remain dependent on the success of the first film, and whilst it’s virtually a given to be hugely successful at the box office, there is never a guarantee.
“I would never presume there would be another picture – that is up to the audience,” he explained. “But if the audience jumps up and likes it and wants another one, Christian and I have been talking about it and we’ll see what happens.”
“You have to see how the film is received,” McG added. “And that’s in the hands of the fans.”

PG-13 was the death knell for me in regards to this. I will be wondering how hardcore the ending could have been if they stuck with their roots and didn’t water it down for the pre-teen/early teen audience. McG = FAILURE.

…Translated: “I’ve got this totally $#%@’d up ending that I like, but nobody else gets. That’s okay, screw everyone! I’ll just say if you don’t get it, then you’re a l00z3r and a retard, and laugh at you!”

Can’t wait for the film. Awesome that the ending will keep everyone guessing and that it will lead a mystery into Terminator 5!
I have no problem with the PG-13 rating, otherwise I’d have to hate on The Dark Knight too. Besides, Terminator 1 & 2 would get PG-13 ratings these days as PG-13 films aren’t what they used to be.

I’m personally pleased to hear that the ending won’t be served up black and white. I think the first film in a proposed Trilogy should absolutely leave the audience guessing and eager for answers and given that’s McG’s intention it only serves to enhance my anticipation for what this movie may have to offer.
A PG 13 rating is neither here nor there for me in this particular case, since it appears the only element dropped from the film is a topless scene (if in fact it has actually been dropped – I don’t know). I also share the view that the original Terminator and Terminator 2: Judgment Day would be rated PG-13 these days. In fact, those films were rated PG in some countries, just not the USA. As you say Alana, The Dark Knight was also rated PG-13 and that had no bearing on how cool that film was.
I am however sorry that McG did’nt get his way to have the film distributed as he would have wanted it, but I’m sure we’ll also get a directors cut at some point so all those who want that topless scene will no doubt get it in the end.
