‘The Green Lantern’ Pulls Out Of Australia

Bad news for the Australian film industry, and bad news for the cast, crew and fans of The Green Lantern – the film will no longer be shot in Australia.

The U.S. dollar has been falling and the Australian dollar strengthening, resulting in the conversion between the two currencies losing the value that was previously offered when Warner Bros. Pictures elected to shoot The Green Lantern in Australia.

The Australian dollar hit 95 cents to the U.S. dollar on Friday, which marked a 27-year high for the Aussie dollar ,but a 30% drop in value against the U.S. dollar.  This equates to roughly a $20 million increase in costs to the film’s production.

Warner Bros. are tipped to move the film to Mexico or Canada.

Where the Wild Things Are was shot in Australia and The Chronicles of Narnia: Voyage of the Dawn Treader is also being shot there.  Unfortunately for the Australian industry, Dawn Treader looks like being the only big budget feature that will be taken down under until either the Aussie dollar drops significantly, or the greenback strengthens significantly.
