‘The Vampire Diaries’ Premiere Breaks CW Records
Despite being almost unbearable to watch given atrocious sound, the premiere of The Vampire Diaries has set the record as the “Most Watched Series Premiere Ever” for the CW Network with 4.84 million viewers.
The huge ratings haul was attributed largely to a female fan base, with the shows premier breaking the record for the “CW’s Best Ratings in the Time Period Ever with Women” and, combined with Supernatural, led the CW to its “Best Thursday Ever with Women.”
The stats for The Vampire Diaries premiere on CW:
- most watched CW series premiere ever with 4.84 million viewers
- highest ratings ever in the 8-9pm time period with women 18-34 (3.0/10), women 18-49 (2.8/8), teens (2.7/11) and female teens (3.4/14)
- the best performance in its timeslot in adults 18-34 (2.2/8), adults 18-49 (2.1/6) and viewers (4.84mil) since Oct. 2007
- built in the second half hour, growing 18% with women 18-34, 10% in adults 18-34, 17% in females 12-34, 14% in persons 12-34, 12% in women 18-49, 10% in adults 18-49 and 9% in viewers
- second in the 8:00-9:00p.m. hour with women 18-34 and adults 18-34, behind only football
- beat ABC and Fox in adults 18-49 and total viewers
- combined with Supernatural scored the network’s best Thursday ever with women 18-34 (2.4/7) and women 18-49 (2.2/6).
- combined with Supernatural was the CW’s best Thursday since March 2007 with adults 18-34 (1.8/6)
- combined with Supernatural achieved the network’s largest Thursday audience (4.1mil) since Sept. 2008.
These are excellent results for a series with enormous potential, however, my only question is how many people will tune out if the series continues to play out with the same sound issues as the premiere?
I found myself struggling to hear what the characters were saying half the time, and I spent the other half trying to blot out the songs that were being played way too loud. Songs became the foreground sound whilst the actual dialogue became background, which made my experience of the premiere very average indeed.
The episode would definitely have benefitted from a background score rather than foreground songs. If each episode plays out with similar sound issues, I would most definitely find myself tuning out and, judging by reactions on Twitter, it would seem I am not alone with this sentiment.
Still, let’s see what they do with episode 2…
