The Strain

Guillermo del Toro, writer/director of Hellboy 2 and the upcoming The Hobbit, is bringing his expertise in creating extraordinary creatures and stories on screen to the bookstore with a new vampire trilogy book series.

They have always been here. Vampires.
In secret and in darkness.
Waiting. Now their time has come.
In one week, Manhattan will be gone.
In one month,the country.
In two months – the world.

So begins the introduction to The Strain, the first book in the trilogy.  The Strain has been co-written by del Toro with award-winning crime author Chuck Hogan.  It centers on a plague that turns humans into terrifying bloodsuckers and will follow a group of people as they struggle to save their family, friends, city – and the world.

A cool viral trailer has been released to promote the first book, which you can watch below:

The trilogy will trace the origins of the plague from the ancient times to now where the virus begins to spread throughout New York City.  Wired report that del Toro teamed up with Hogan so that the series could achieve the feel of “a science-injected modern television show”.  Interestingly, the novels evolved from del Toro’s intention to create a vampire based TV series.

You can watch an interview with del Toro as he talks about his inspiration for the series below:

First thing I thought when I watched the trailer was that it reminded me of Blade 2.

After reading the article I’m left wondering if this will eventually make its way to TV after all.

I love the idea of trailers made for books, certainly makes you want to read it!
